    I am un-American since I hate both green bean casserole and pumpkin pie. But never fear...my MIL makes a California mix casserole with Velveeta and Ritz crackers, and an absolutely scrumptious chocolate pie.

    chocolate pie is really good too. My grandma made a wonderful one, but I am not good at making it.

    I did this with a stuffed pork loin once--the stuffing made it semi-traditional, which cut back on the squawking from family.

    Good luck. Get the outside and cavity as dry as possible, leave plenty of room in the fry pot, and plan on it taking up to a few minutes to lower it into the oil. I'm sure you've seen the boilover fire videos.

    I could see the pork loin. Steak just doesn't feel Thanksgiving-y to me.

    I really like Good Eats episode on how to do that safely.

    I prefer my apricot glazed turkey recipe to a traditional cooked turkey.

    That sounds delicious. I'm weirdly more OK with people getting fancy on the turkey than I am with any of the sides.

    Re: Favorite Thanksgiving Foods or Traditions

    Weird, I know, but sometimes we have roast turkey.

    Actually, not much of a fan of Pumpkin Pie. It's sorta like meh. I'll maybe eat a piece if that's all there is.

    We actually (even the kids) like lima beans (the real Fordhooks - frozen NOT CANNED. And not those hard little Babies) swimming in butter and lightly salted. Yumm!

    Also HOME CANNED pickled beets. Is there anything better?

    No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine.

    Re: Favorite Thanksgiving Foods or Traditions

    Ultimate first helping:
    * Turkey dark meat
    * Stuffing w/ gravy
    * Mashed potatoes (gravy)
    * Broccoli casserole (if available) — may substitute corn
    * Bread of some sort
    * "Relish-tray" items: Olives, carrots, dill pickle

    Second trip:
    * Turkey white w/ gravy
    * Stuffing w/gravy
    * Stuffing (on the side)

    I don't like cranberries or sweet potatoes, and I load up so much on main courses, dessert is irrelevant to me — I like a little pumpkin pie "later." Like, on Saturday.

    Yeah, i'm not a huge turkey fan either, which is even worse when it comes to the whole leftovers thing. If i wasnt a big fan the first time around i sure don't want the leftovers.

    I'm usually in it for the pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, rolls, fruit salads, etc.

    Especially those cheap crusty rolls that come in the white cardboard tray thing that are ridiculously awesome.
