    Wells Fargo Arena....

Ok, so I read an article on the DM Rag website (and Omaha.com) about DM getting picked over for hosting the MVC conference tourney, at least until 2011. One of the factors mentioned was that the WFA holds fewer seats than the arena in STL (and KC and Omaha for that matter). Bummer for DM. I recall a year or two ago, the NCAA not selecting DM to host the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Again, capacity was an issue. WTF? (also, the article says in a couple places the cap. is 15,500, whereas on the IEC website, cap. for b-ball is listed at 16,110... who's spinning here?)

My question is, what were they THINKING when designing the building? I recall budgets and funding were an issue when the Iowa Events Center was being constructed, but cripes, didn't anyone do their homework? Did anyone contact the NCAA as to what minimum capacity would be required to host a men's tourney site, or the wrestling championships, or even a conference tourney? Yeah, DSM has a 1st/2nd rounder for the women's tourney this year, but if there isn't an ISU, Drake, UNI or EIU, I can't imagine attendance will be all that impressive.

Marty and Miller were talking about this recently and the lack of big name events coming to the place (please refrain from talking about Bon Jovi... it's in another thread)... they are going to Omaha and KC.. they also mentioned Stars attendance is dismal. It seems that when I was in central Iowa in the 90s, Ames/Hilton got better acts. I applaud DM and Polk County for building a nice venue for Iowa, but it just seems some things weren't done right in the construction planning and management of the facilities.

what does everyone think of the facility for those who have been there ? (I haven't, just on the outside) How does it compare to other arenas?

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

I think the facility is nice yet not impressive.

I also agree with you and the discussions - it seems someone lacked some planning/research abilities when constructing this.

I agree it seems they didn't do much homework when they were building it on seating capacity.

On a side noted, I was in downtown Indianapolis this weekend and saw the new Lucas Oil Stadium (Colts new stadium) being constructed, HOLY CRAP!!!!!! That place is huge, really tall, seriously looks like twice the height of the RCA Dome.

They do a horrible job promoting that place. Don't know who's in charge there but I've seen one hockey game it was pathetic maybe 400 people there and the only reason I went was b/c it was in the suite with free beer and food. DSM will always be 3rd fiddle to omaha and kc.

    Re: Wells Fargo Arena....

My honest opinion is 1) Des Moines is not a big hotbed and 2) there aren't adequate lodging and entertainment options in the downtown area. The Rag had some thing last week about expanding Hy-Vee Hall already over a project that would put a big hotel downtown. All the hotels are out in the west suburbs. That's fine if you are on business but when you go to a big arena or ballpark there are several large hotels within walking distance usually and things to do in the area as well.

This is why I think Des Moines fails to land any major sporting events because they haven't proven they can handle them or the crowd it brings in. The 1st and 2nd round Women's NCAA is at WF Arena this season so that has to go off without a hitch and get great reviews if they want a chance down the road to land anything bigger.

    Re: Wells Fargo Arena....

IMO, the mistake of not getting enough seating to even compete for hosting some big events was the dumbest thing I had heard regarding the WFA. I remember when it was being completed they wouldn't have enough seating to ever host the NCAA tourney or things of that nature. Basically they just wasted a bunch of taxpayers money again. Thanks DSM.

Another problem is there are not enough hotels nearby. There is only 1 crappy hotel right there, and then just a few nice ones downtown. That is another reason we can never host the NCAA's.

    Re: Wells Fargo Arena....

    Atleast they have Bon Jovi?

Seriously though, I've been to Wells Fargo only a couple times, once for the Capital Challenge or whatever, and once for Stars hockey. Both times I wasn't all that impressed with the facilities. For being brand new I expected a lot better in terms of seats, comfort, concessions etc. If they really wanted to draw big name bands and conference tournies and whatnot they really needed to step it up in the quality department, because who in their right mind wants to visit Des Moines?

I got my tickets to a Colts vs. Jags December 2. Can not wait to see the new stadium. I saw it last year when it was pretty muchh footings and a lot of ground work.

I don't know why I'm continually surprised by the idicoy of others. Simple planning and simple research avoids this conversation. This is going to come back and bite us in the butt for years to come.

Agreed, I think hotels and lodging is a bigger problem than the arena.

    Re: Wells Fargo Arena....

Besides ISU basketball there hasn't been any reason to go to WFA. Went to a Stars game once, but that was because beer and food was comped. Des Moines has all these minor league teams and ultimately who really cares about minor league sports. Let's see spend my money driving to Ames to see the Cyclones play or watching an Iowa Energy game....competitive college basketball vs. European league wanttobes.

    Re: Wells Fargo Arena....

I also assume that one problem is that Des Moines is in the middle of MSP/Omaha/KC and stretching it a bit even STL and CHI. Why would major acts come to Des Moines when they could go two nights in either of these cities and still draw some of the same people? I have gone to Chicago and St Paul this fall for concerts and don't find it to be that tough to do.

I saw Springsteen in Des Moines in the summer of 2006 and found the arena to be very nice. Nothing too different (other than size) from the arenas in the bigger cities in the midwest.
