    CPR Radio Comments 11-5-2012

Going from memory (please add corrections where I go off track), last night CPR was asked to preview both the OL and DL heading into spring ball.

We lose both OTs (Bykowski, Burris are seniors), and their backups are a pair of redshirt freshmen, Brock Dagel (6-8, 290) and Jamison Lalk (6-6, 280), both Iowa boys. To boost the OT position with more experience, other OL could move to OT.

CPR mentioned Kyle Lichtenberg (6-6, 301), and, I think, Bob Graham (6-5, 285). The latter two have excellent foot movement, CPR said, which is a requirement for OTs who often play in space. CPR said neither Lichtenberg or Graham are best suited for guard play, where they've been spending time, since they're lankier kids rather than the big heavies they like at the guards.

Also, CPR mentioned the injured Shaban Dika, 6-5, 315 and rookies Daniel Burton, 6-5, 290, and Jacob Dunning, 6-5, 275. I can't recall if these three were mentioned at guard or tackle, but the question was about the tackle positions. I don't recall that CPR mentioned rookie Duaron Williams (6-3, 298), perhaps he's still recovering from his knee injury.

Defensive line-wise, CPR said they've been playing 12 kids at the four positions this fall, six DEs and six DLs. We lose a lot of senior experience in the interior DL. But, CPR said that he was not only pleased with the young guys but was thrilled with them.

He mentioned that DE Pierre Aka, 6-3, 277, is about 290 pounds now and will likely at some point move inside. Said that Aka has not played football for long and so has a tremendous upside. In glowing terms CPR also mentioned rookies Collin Bevins, 6-5, 269, Devlyn Cousin, 6-2, 289, Mitchell Meyers, 6-4, 259, and Quinton Pompey, 6-3, 310. Pompey, CPR added, is now under 300 pounds, more streamlined. (The hts and wts here are from the ISU roster; I don't think they're current, based on wts that CPR mentioned.)

CPR also gave a particularly nice word for walk-on rSo Austin Krick, 6-2, 263 (CPR said he was a walk-on, for those here counting scholarships). Krick will be playing at some point.

Bottom line, I believe, is that CPR said we are talented across the DL and a lot of the guys will be playing next fall, they just won't be experienced.

BTW, CPR made no mention of DE Rosey Maggitt applying for a sixth year medical redshirt. He did say rFr DE Devin Lemke, 6-4, 230, who they expected to get snaps this fall, continues to recover from a second shoulder surgery. Is this old news?

Thanks for the report. I don't think any of that is old news.

I'm pumped about Bevins on the D-line.

Interesting comments about the O-line. ISU needs to figure out a way to get more creative in the run game next year with the current group of lineman that we have.

I have heard Graham is going to be a stud for us in the future.

Always seen Lemke in a sling, but he is out of it now. I love the way our D-Line has been developed. I fully expect Shane Burnham to take over the DC when his dad decides to hang up his whistle. I am excited to see these young guys step it up in the future.

I think having Dika back next year will help a lot at the RG position. Neither of the guys there this year are really built to be interior linemen. It will also be interesting to see if Duaron Williams can crack the 2-deep.

Lemke is still pretty small and needs a lot of weight

Dika would have been a heck of 3-year starter if not for injuries. Hopefully he can get back.
I would be surprised if Williams saw action next year.

I liked the old women from Michigan that called in complaining that her Cyclones TV didn't work right and she wanted Pollard and Walters to troubleshoot it...

    Agree.
Yes, let's pray to God that Dika can get healthy. Big, strong and brings a bit of nasty up front. I've felt for him with all the injuries he's had to endure....

    Those calls are always great.

I also like the guys who call in to complain about the scoreboard being too loud, only to be told that (for the n-th week in a row) the volume was set at the same level it was the week before when people called in to complain that it was too quiet.

Let's also not forget the caller who asked Pollard why Bobby Stoops wouldn't autograph the caller's miniature OU football helmet.

Any callers ask about what stoops said to CPR after the game that made CPR look PO'ed?

    Re: CPR Radio Comments 11-5-2012

Just echoing others regarding Dika. With the little playing time I've seen from him, I've been very impressed. If he can be healthy for us next year, I think it will be a big upgrade from Lichtenberg/Graham. Nothing against those two, but I've thought as well that they look more suited for tackle.

I think our interior should be good next year with Tuftee, Farniok, and Dika, and that we'll see a marked improvement in the run game because of it. If we can finally find a serviceable QB, we may see a dramatic improvement in the offense (of course, we've been saying that for years now).

Pretty sire CPR mentioned Lichtenberg and Gannon, rather than Graham. He said that both were long and had good feet, and were better suited for tackle than guard.

    Nice report, thanks CV!
