Illinois vs. Ohio State: Bad officiating?

Story about the officiating crew on Yahoo

Pretty interesting article. I didn't watch much of the game, but I hadn't heard of any outright controversial calls.

Has any game ever had good officiating to both sides?

Ohio State is much like EIU. If they lose there had to be MANY reasons why. I only saw some of the game, but what I saw Illinois dominated.

Re: Illinois vs. Ohio State: Bad officiating?

The loss cost No. 1 Ohio State a shot at playing for the BCS title, which would have netted the conference $17 million.
Yup, because if tOSU beats Illinois, they get the win over Michigan. It's a two-fer deal the Big Ten has going on. The commercials have been running all week "beat Illinois, and you don't have to play your next game, we'll just spot you a conference win!"

Re: Illinois vs. Ohio State: Bad officiating?

There was one play early in the game where Illinois had a 80 yard run and the rb clearly fumbled the ball into the endzone for a touchback that was called down. Other than that I didn't think the officiating looked any worse than normal.

The whole bcs money thing also brings up the fact that it isn't really fair that the Big Ten (and Pac 10 for that matter) Don't play conference championship games like the rest of the conferences thus making it easier to get 2 teams in the BCS.

Re: Illinois vs. Ohio State: Bad officiating?

Another gem by our buddy Tom Dienhart. (Insert 22's puking smily here)

Were there blown calls? That's debatable. But perception matters more than reality. And the reality is this crew shouldn't have been trusted with such a game.

The perception matters more than actual bad calls? Are you serious Tommy? I bet Jim Tressel is sitting there going "They blew 28 calls this weekend but I don't care about those, it's all about the media and fans perception of these officials". Who cares if the officials make the right calls, its all about perception here...what a freaking joke.

Are you kidding me? That article is garbage. And the person who wrote it is garbage.

On the other side of that, the Big 12, SEC and ACC get a fair chunk of change for that championship game. It's really a self-inflicted situation. I like the Big 12/SEC/ACC way of doing it though, since it pretty much ensures that the best two teams in the conference will play each other every year, unlike what we've seen in years past in the Big 10 (when Iowa was "co-champions" with Ohio State).

At least in the Pac 10 each team plays everybody else, like the Big East it is a round robin championship. But not the Big 10.

Step 1: Cut a hole in the box.

Everyone knows the lead official is a Michigan grad! (I'm trying to channel my best KingRalphie impersonation)
