Have we already played in our bowl game?

Hey, we are very forunate to be playing in a BCS league. (You do remember 2010, right?) We are already playing the best teams in the country every Saturday in Jack Trice Stadium and in other equally branded venues.

What team would we play in mid December, in some half empty stadium that is going to be anywhere in the caliber who we haven't already played?

Have we already played in our bowl game?

I don't even know why we are bothering playing the rest of the year after we won the Super Bowl in Iowa City.

Re: Have we already played in our bowl game?

This is a valid point. If we get to 6,7, or even 8 wins, who would be as good as us with a similar record? Maybe an SEC team although aside from their top 3-4 teams they are not very good? A PAC 12 team (Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA??) B1G will have their middle of the pack teams playing in the Rose Bowl and other New Year's Day bowls. So we would likely get a ****** B1G team. ACC has Clemson and FSU and that is it.

If we are to get bowl eligible it will interesting to see a team that is better than what we have already played.

The extra practice time is probably the biggest advantage to playing a bowl. And getting out of Iowa in the middle of winter.

Sure, we might not play a team better than any we've played already. But who says that is the point of bowls anytime in the last 20 years. Its as much about giving extra practice time and a nice trip for fans as anything else.

Why don't you do us a favor and become either a Gamecocks or Tigers fan...

Re: Have we already played in our bowl game?

How about just ask the question, are the league games more exciting than a lower level bowl opponent? Answer for me is yes but I always like seeing the cyclones suit up one more time no matter who they play and of course the added practice and exposure doesn't hurt either. Every week is exciting in the big 12 that's for sure.

Re: Have we already played in our bowl game?

I understand what the OP is getting at, it's pretty unlikely that any team we play in a bowl will be on par with over half of the teams we have to play in our conference week in and week out. But bowl games aren't about being challenged any more. They are nothing more than glorified exhibitions designed to make money - for sponsors, for cities, etc.

Obviously there are benefits to the program for achieving postseason play - extra practice time, additional media exposure, recruiting benefits. But the game itself is pretty meaningless. I mean, was anyone really excited last year to be matched up against Rutgers? How about previous years against Minnesota? Miami (Oh)? Boise? I thought it was pretty cool to see us play 'Bama in 2001, but otherwise, meh.

Re: Have we already played in our bowl game?

Don't forget the recruiting benefit. I'm not sure how many guys are swayed by the games we'll be in, but it sure can't help to be in that group of teams that stays home for bowl season.
