    Unlimited Vacation Time?

    What are your thoughts? I think it's a bad idea. I could see myself feeling guilty about using vacation time. PTO is great IMO. You don't have to lie about being sick and the longer you work somewhere the more hours you get.

    This is something I have often thought about. I have never been an "hours" guy. I'm a "get what you need to get done, done" guy. If it's 20 hours, great. If it's 100, great. If I ran a company I think I would really consider this. Hire the right people and it won't be an issue.

    There is a good point at the end of the article too. I only get 10 days. I take 5 in the Winter and honestly, I don't struggle to keep everything else within the last 5. That said, I would bet I am removed from work completely only about 3 of those days, if that. In this world, there are a lot of professions where you don't really have to be "at work" to be at work. Honestly, I could do mostly everything I need to without anyone ever knowing I was doing it. I have never found a point in employees sitting around for half a day. Get them out of there if there is nothing to do.

    I could see it working for the right type of business, if you don't have to be around to work with customers or clients, if you can get your work done then what's the difference?

    I just think as an employee at a company like this I would shortchange myself when it comes to hours. Then I'd see other people take more hours that don't deserve it and I'd be ******.

    I like the idea. Company morale should improve and if you have the right people, they'll be more productive when they are there.

    I think it's good for some professions, not for others. I am basically in this position right now. My productivity is only measured in deliverable so as long as I'm keeping up with that, what I do with my time is up to me. Of course I also often work on weekends and late at night when deadlines approach, but it's a trade off.

    I get 20 days vacation and 6 sick days a year; used 2 sick days in the last two years.

    Guy I work with "works from home" one or two times a week, but doesn't take anything to work on and somehow manages to drive to Cedar Rapids or the Quad Cities when's he's working from home.

    For the most part, I've read that the net result of companies which give unlimited vacation is that employees end of taking less vacation than with a PTO system. Basically employees feel guilty about looking like slackers if they take too much time off, so they usually just don't. Pretty much employees only take extended time off if there is a family emergency.
