Re: Lineman Shawn Curtis says Iowa State is "Amazing" (Stars/offers)

On Sed (and players alike)- These evaluators can't tell how a kid is going to do away from home, in the college atmosphere or in Sed's case, at game time. From everything I have heard, Sed was the real deal in practice. He looked the part. Something happened when the lights came on. I don't know what it was and I doubt anyone really does. It could have been the staff. perhaps with a different atmosphere he would have made it. Point being, Talent evaluators are much more often right than wrong. They are looking at talent. There is a lot more to football than talent. Then, on the flip side you have guys like Jesse Smith who didn't have stars and did have talent reflecting the lack of stars. The thing was, he was coached up and was wicked smart so all of a sudden you have a guy who's All B12, but wouldn't sniff the NFL. Then, you have guys like Knott and Klein not to mention numerous NFL plays who didn't have the stars but did have the talent and did have the mental game to make it even beyond college ball. You can't determine how someone adapts and progresses when they are 18. There is just so much more than measurables in play.

Just another example of how much easier it is to recruit these higher recruits when you can get them to visit. Kids from florida and california don't know a lot about ISU. Heck I'm from northern MN and i knew next to nothing about it 4 years ago. As with me once you visit and see the place you fall in love. The more publicity we get, the more they'll know, and the more eager they'll be to set foot on campus.

Well Wake Forest is playing Boston College...that should be exciting. Let's sign him up! Choose the good guys, Shawn!

Hilton Coliseum was specifically built to hold in sound with a solid concrete structure, steel doors, and a crowd that sits just a few feet from the court. With a fan base that frequently ranks among the nations largest crowds, players from opposing teams, as well as Iowa State, have said that the floor has shaken due to the loudness of the crowd

I thought this board concluded that stars don't matter? Don't we want 1 star recruits with no other offers?

Ill be honest - I've never been to a wake forest game, or to Winston-Salem for that matter... But I would guess we'll best them in "atmosphere".

I think what has been most helpful to the gameday atmosphere is being competitive in every game we play. OK, so that is a Captain Obvious statement. However, if you look at past seasons, we could have finished 7-5 but some of the 5 losses were absolute blowouts at home. Rhoads has really minimized the big losses. We are in every game. People want to be in the stadium to see if the 12th man can give an assist. It is really, really fun. Anyone who hasn't been to Ames for tailgating and gameday wouldn't understand. It is one of the best gameday experiences out there, in my opinion.

The new facilities are already helping recruiting, hopefully a big sign of things to come.

They don't give stars for teach-ability.

A great high school athlete gets treated like a god for doing what comes easily to him. But not many can do that in college where the competition goes up so far. It is hard for many of them to make the shift to having to work hard in order to be successful.

That's what I was thinking. If they both commit and pan out (I know, huge if), you have a great set of tackles to anchor the line for 3-4 years.
