Some rules emphasis for this season

NCAA.com article on rules emphasis for this upcoming season. I like some of it if they can pull it off since it could mean less mauling and brawling style and more basketball. I really hate watching the thuglike hack-a-sister style play.

    • Incidental Elbow Contact. There can be incidental contact with the elbow above or below the shoulders and not all elbow contact with the elbow is a foul regardless of where the elbow makes contact.

To e the two biggies are reducing what is an elbow foul from what they put in place last year and the new guarding rule:

Contact On/By the Ball Handler/Dribbler. Defenders are permitted one touch on the ball handler/dribbler in order to measure up. The next touch by the same defender on the ball handler is a foul.

These "points of emphasis" will be emphasized for the first month of the season, sporadically enforced in December, and then it'll be a free-for-all once we get to January.

I disagree; they will be enforced sporadically throughout the season so players will not know what they should and shouldn't do during conference play.

Really? If this is enforced it will be greatly to our advantage. I don't think it will happen. Typically our ladies get accosted with no call. Now a second "touch" is a foul. Just not gonna happen.?

What is the definition of "one touch"? If the defender puts a hand on a dribbler to measure up, and never takes it off, technically, that could be considered one touch.

I like the spirit of that rule, but my pessimistic side says it will be very loosely enforced. If it were tightly enforced, it could dramatically alter the style of NCAA WBB.

Re: Some rules emphasis for this season

Also, is it a second touch when the dribbler trys to back the defender down and the defender's hand touches the dribbler as she holds her ground? Is it a second touch when a dribbler drives and then resets and the defender measures up again?

Officials are going to be all over the board on this one. I'll bet they won't be able to even get all the officials on a single crew on the same page.

Re: Some rules emphasis for this season

I did not see anything in last night's exhibition game to indicate the officials are doing anything differently. Maybe some of the more observant members of this board can point to some examples of the officials actually calling the game differently than they have in the past.

Re: Some rules emphasis for this season

I'm not sure there was a need for it to be called differently. It was an exhibition game where one team was stronger than another, as expected. It's just areas to focus on. In most cases/games, not a whole lot will be changed.

Now that TAM is gone, who is the next grabbiest, body-checking team in the Big 12? It gives our coaches something to work with in those games. Nobody wants to see indoor women's rugby, which was the direction things were going...

Anything they can do to slow down the women's game would be good. It's too fast paced now. I can hardly keep up with all the below the rim excitement.

West Virginia, and I am sure Texas under Aston will be that way too.
