    Down Memory Lane...

    *stats taken from cyclones.com

Knott and Klein both made it on the field in the Cyclones first two games of their freshman year in 2009. But, the first time they each made the stat sheet was in Game 3, on the road at Kent State.

After a 22 yard Touchdown pass from Arnaud to Jake Williams in the 1st quarter, Grant Mahoney kicked off to Anthony Bowman of Kent State. Jake Knott and Joel Zitek wrestled Bowman to the ground at the 27 yard line. That was Knott's first tackle as a Cyclone.

With 50 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, Kent State's Andre Flowers was taken down after a 3 yard gain by A.J. Klein. This was Klein's first career tackle.

8 minutes left in the game...Iowa State led 34-7. Kent State had 1st and Goal at the 1 yard line. On first down, Kent State tried to pound it in. Jake Knott tackled Flowers 3 yards behind the line. That was Knott's first career tackle for loss. On second down, Kent State again tried to run into the end zone. This time, Knott tackled Flowers 4 yards behind the line. On third down, Kent State got smart and threw an 8 yard touchdown pass to make the score 34-14.

With 2:46 left in the game, A.J. Klein recovered a Kent State fumble and the Cyclones offense ran the clock out to win the game.

Knott finished the game with 4 solo tackles, 2 assist, 6 total tackles. 2 for tackles for a loss of 7 yards.
Klein finished the game with 2 solo tackles and a fumble recovery.

Good stats. A lot different team back then than now. Still amazing players.

Great post. It's amazing how far ISU has come. That Kent State game broke a 17 game road losing streak.

Knott and Klein didn't have a ton of playing time their freshman year. Knott finished the year with 23 tackles. Klein ended with 17. Jesse Smith was a BEAST all year and led the team with 135 tackles.

Knott or Klein led the team in tackles all but 2 games their sophomore year. David Sims was the leading tackler against Utah and Nebraska.

Jake Knott finished 2010 with 130 tackles. 4 interceptions. 4 forced fumbles. 1 sack.
A.J. Klein finished the season with 111 tackles and 3 interceptions returned for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns.

    Re: Down Memory Lane...

Jeremy Reeves has had a great career. The 2 plays I will always remember about Reeves happened 7 days apart in his sophomore year.

Being ahead 13-0 vs UNI at the half made me very nervous. Then the Panthers started the 2nd half by driving down the field and into scoring position. At the 6 yard line, Reeves jumped a route and took the interception back 94 yards for the score. Instead of 13-7, all of a sudden, Iowa State was ahead 20-0. Huge moment in that game.

The next week against Tech, Reeves grabbed the onside kick and ran it back for a touchdown to seal the game.

    Re: Down Memory Lane...

Josh Lenz has had a ton of great moments. He had a huge play vs Kansas that year. After the big win at Texas, ISU could do nothing against the Jayhawks in the first half. Lenz punt return for a score at the end of the first half changed the momentum of the day in Iowa State's favor. It had been so long since the Cyclones had housed a kick that I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing when it happened. Amazing play.

I didn't want to sidetrack the main point — excellent retrospective trivia — but I thought the same thing when I saw the photo.

    Re: Down Memory Lane...

If ISU hadn't been in a situation where Rhoads needed to play these guys as true freshmen...

We'd be looking at 2 linebackers racking up 4 years worth of all Big 12 honors, and next years defense would look a lot better right now.

    Re: Down Memory Lane...

Kent State is 7-1 (4-0 MAC) and just beat a ranked Rutgers squad that was previously undefeated by forcing 7 TOs. Kent State has come a little way since we played them then. Nice memory though. All wins are.

Agreed, they look damn fine. I like the whites as well and we should keep them for an alternate, IMO.
