    Ferentz's Buyout

Northwestern 28, Iowa 17: We covered this in The Walkthrough on Friday, but it bears repeating: If the Hawkeyes elect to fire Kirk Ferentz, they're on the hook for $250,000 a month to Ferentz until January 2020. That lead balloon of a contract kept non-existent NFL teams away from Ferentz, and it will probably keep the Hawkeyes under their current leadership for the foreseeable future.

Amazing to realize that his buyout is even larger than Chizik's and Dooley's

I would try to get fired with that contract. Get paid 250K for 8 yrs. to go golfing, hunting, fishing, travel, etc.

    Re: Ferentz's Buyout

I love this fact and hope Ferentz stays there forever. He is the best Halkeye coach that an ISU fan could hope for. The downside is that this mistake will make it tough for the Board of Regents to approve golden handcuffs for Rhoads.

Remember, you're unique. Just like everyone else.

Until further notice, the Big 12 tournament is best. There's an experience here. Not just the teams -- the feel, the vibe, the establishments. Iowa State not only won the pregame -- filling the nearby Power & Light District -- it won the whole damn scene.

He won't be fired this year and doesn't deserve to IMO. He better not be struggling to make a bowl game next year though or he'll be out.

    Re: Ferentz's Buyout

As much as I like to see the Hawks struggle, Ferentz is not going anywhere. There team is young. Ferentz has had alot of success at Iowa and the chances a getting a worse coach is highly possible.

That said, with the talent (in terms or star rankings), Iowa should be much better lately. Fernetz seems to be struggling in developing the talent or getting them to jell on the field. CPR is doing much more with much less in terms of talent.

Do you think so? That's an awful lot of money to pay out.

    Re: Ferentz's Buyout

Unbelievable that he's paid just basically to occassionally beat Wisconsin and be the second best of Ohio State, hoping that they'll get lucky once in a while. And of course, there's always New Year's bowl :)

Coach Ferentz is probably the best coach in college football. The man deserves a raise and contract extension!! I want this guy to be around until he dies of old age.

He's 2 years removed from an 11 win season.

Yes, and I have little doubt. Iowa has money. They're no Texas or OSU in that regard but they aren't poor.

Frankly, I think the only reason he's getting another year is because of how young this team is. He'd better choose wisely on the quarterback position next year.

Also, good chance Barta is shown the door as well if Ferentz goes. You can't have a coach signed that far into the future for that amount of money. Not even sure if Nick Saban is signed through 2020.

They can afford the buyout next year??? With what money?? They are not hurting.. True.. But that is a lot of money. They decided not to spend money on a new practice facility until this last year, but they have enough to can a coach for a tune of 21 mil.

Plus they will have to pay a new head coach as well.
