    Question Best ISU defense...ever?

This sounds of hyperbole, I know. But in looking at some ISU computer rankings we were as high as 7th nationally in defense.

    Massey Ratings - Iowa State

If we finish the year that highly, could this be the best Cyclone defense of all-time? Do others compare either statistically, or in more qualitative terms of personnel or performance?

    Re: Best ISU defense...ever?

Looking at the stats on Cyclones.com, this year's defense is certainly in the running. The only other "modern" team worth discussing (aka teams for which I could easily find detailed stats) is the 2005 defense. The 2005 teams had lower "per play" stats (yards per rush, yards per pass attempt, etc) and fewer points per game. However, 2005 was just long enough ago that they didn't play against the high octane offenses that this defense does. The 2005 team collected 27 sacks and 22 interceptions through 12 games, and so far this team has 14 and 10 through 8 games. I'd say that the best Cyclone defense of the modern era award certainly belongs to either the 2005 team or this 2012 team, with the other as a close second.

I vote "no" currently. I may change my tune by season's end.

Per play numbers may provide a more balanced comparison, but points allowed still has to be considered (although that's also dependent on opponent tendencies).

    1977: 14.8
    2005: 17.0
    2012 (so far): 15.0

Hard to say. 2005 was really good, and probably would have been better had they not been neutered so many times when we were ahead. This one is really good too.

    Re: Best ISU defense...ever?

2005 was great, but 2005 was also a much weaker schedule. The north was very down, and we only had to play against the bottom half of the south, Baylor, OSU, and TAMU that had 6 conference wins between the three of them.

That season, such a missed opportunity. This team, with all its flaws, would roll through that schedule.

Our schedule consisted of sagarin ranked:
    24 nebraska
    26 iowa
    32 kansas
    36 colorado
    39 missouri
    40 texas a&m
    56 kansas state
    57 baylor
    83 oklahoma state
    86 army
    89 illinois state

Not a single team above 24.

    Compare that to this season
    3 kansas state
    5 oklahoma
    8 texas tech
    16 oklahoma state
    18 texas
    30 tcu
    37 baylor
    43 west virginia
    54 tulsa
    66 iowa
    85 kansas
    199 western illinois

5 teams higher than our highest ranked opponent in 05

Valid as far as strength of schedule (at least with 2012's numbers to this point), but may not tell us much about comparing the 05 vs 12 defenses.

I think this year's defense looks better than 2005. Subjective.

Unless someone can do some serious number-crunching, we're all speculating to some extent.

Massey's done some number-crunching for us. He has schedule-adjusted offensive and defensive ratings for every team each year from 1960 forward. Here's the years ISU was 40th or better on defense.

    1969: 37
    1971: 28
    1972: 29
    1973: 36
    1974: 19
    1976: 40
    1977: 19
    1978: 13
    1980: 34
    2001: 34
    2004: 28
    2005: 20
    2012: 7 (pre-Baylor)

    FWIW.

    Re: Best ISU defense...ever?

I think this defense on those years would be better. Offenses are just more electric, and rules have been changed a little that makes it harder for defenses to be great. Plus our schedule is much tougher too.

Our late 70's defense was the best we have ever had.

I was very impressed with Wally and his defense's 4th down stops Saturday night. Big game for the D.

I like this defense but we're a week removed from a performance in which they gave up 600+ yards. That may turn out to be an aberration but I'm hesitant to give out "best ever" accolades with it still fresh in my mind.

I would say it's definitely better than 2005. That defense was good but they played what was frankly an incredibly easy schedule, and didn't have to face the quality of offense this team does. I'm a college student, so besides numbers I can't really compare this defense to those in the late 70s.

    Re: Best ISU defense...ever?

This is easily the best D in my lifetime and I would not hesitate to say that its also the best ever. The D has done what it takes to win in every game we've played. If we had had even "merely subpar" (as opposed to horrific) offensive performances in our losses, those D numbers would be even better and we'd be undefeated. This is a D that wins a Big 12 championship ... if it had even the slimmest of offensive support. What this D has done against its own offense's three and outs is the stuff of legends!

I think Rhoads will look back on this season and realize it was his chance to go all the way, if only he hadn't killed it with a terrible O-coordinator hire and a commitment to an ill-suited offensive scheme.
