    Hats off to Courtney Messingham

He called a great game. I loved how they got the ball to Ernst in some creative ways. He mixed his play calling very well. They had some great answers to Baylor's blitzes. That was fun to watch.

Yeah, things were clicking last night. That'll happen when a historically bad defense comes to town. Still, a terrible defense only presents opportunity; the O still needs to take advantage, and ISU did repeatedly. Good to see Mess growing into the job.

Re: Hats off to Courtney Messingham

It was almost unreal how many drops were happening (they were VERY catchable), get half of those and it's a record breaking night.

I liked the balance...Steele could still put a little more zip on some passes and lead the receivers. I saw on another thread, but I agree we need some under center sets for short yardage. That 4th and 1 we didn't get is almost like a 4th and 5 with woody so far back to start.

I've given Coach Mess plenty of blame the last few weeks. I need to give him his credit too. I thought the play-calling was good. Mixed it up. Nice job, Mess.

Re: Hats off to Courtney Messingham

The funny thing is, I can't really point to how Mess really called a different game last night than any other game?

It just shows you how big a difference it makes when you have a QB that can throw the ball, not make many mistakes, you can run the ball a little bit, and you're going up against the worst defense in the country.

Jantz basically made one bad throw and he got intercepted for it. Outside of that, he played how you should expect your QB to play. There was one other throw that probably should have been intercepted, but that was only because our WR ran into the official.... it wasn't really a bad throw.

Now the question is, can Jantz keep this up? Let's hope so. If he can play like that the rest of the season, I see us beating KU, Texas, and possibly even WV.

Its funny that mess is a horrible play caller when play great defenses. He is awesome when we play crappy defenses. Same with steele jantz. Lets get real here people. He will probably be a horrible play caller next week and jantz will suck again.

Re: Hats off to Courtney Messingham

Baylor's defense has been making OCs and QBs look good all year, I think it says more about their team than ours.....BUT this offense (Jantz most of all) needed a game like this, he not only played better last night but his body language and energy were much more positive, and the rest of the offense seemed to respond. That's something to build upon.

Agree, his play calling was nothing special last night. But hey, nothing special is better than bad, which it has been at times. There have been some modifications from earlier in the year, and that has nothing to due with how bad Baylor's defense is.

I'll eat a little crow here, I haven't been a huge fan of how the offense has looked thus far.

Even though it was Baylor, Mess did a good job of throwing a few wrinkles into the system and in general, just not messing up.

The playcall on the throw to Woody was brilliant.

This, but it was a bit underthrown, Woody had to bend down/back quite a bit to get it.

So what? Touchdown. That's what we want.

Yeah maybe next time Mess will call "Shotgun RB Left, RB Sneak out pass overthrow" instead of "Shotgun RB Left, RB Sneak out pass underthrow".

I mean come on what OC wouldn't know that.

Re: Hats off to Courtney Messingham

I don't think the playcalling last night was really any different last night than prevoiusly. Baylor was stacking the line forcing us to beat them through the air and limiting our running game. We averaged 3.8 ypc last night, and had difficulty picking up some short yardage situations - not unlike all of our previous games. The offense finally EXECUTED the passing game and we were able to move the ball, control the clock and score points. We averaged 7.1 yards per pass attempt last night, our second best figure in conference play (the best was 9.0 ypa against TCU - all other conf. games are <6).

You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment.

The moral: you gain more by not being stupid, than you do by being smart. Smart gets neutralized by other smart people. Stupid does not.
