Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

OK, now that the home schedule of the 2007 season is over, I thought it would be good to get a thread going about everyone's thoughts and opinions on the Gameday Atmosphere at Jack Trice. The discussion can maybe bring forward some new ideas/changes that can be forwarded on to Pollard.

Did the new entrance grow on you?
How was the new donor tailgate lot?
Music selection before and during games?
    Concession improvements?
    Others?

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

The new entrance is awesome. Once people catch on it will be great. At Nebraska games they do the same entrance and the place is absolutely crazy once it starts.

Music at times is better. Im surprised that they can not figure out any more current songs to play. It is like all they have upstairs is the 1998 jock jams CD to use.

Tailgaiting is supreme. Best year ever in JTS.

Most importantly the crowds have been awesome all year (students and nonstudents). Playing relatively meaningless games in November with the crowds we have had is awesome.

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

    Need to get updated music..
I like the entrance.. maybe different music.. but its not bad..
once they renovate the whole place will be better as far as concessions..

Need to get rid of the weather guy telling us the forcast and him saying ISU ISU on the microphone...

Overall this year has been fun... cant wait til next year

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

I think the entrance music could be a little better. The Bulls song doesn't seem to get the crowd rocking. Otherwise, I've been happy with what I've seen.

We need to get rid of the guy with the jersey that yells, Cyclone Power. He is annoying, and makes me feel like I am at a high school pep-rally. That is what the video board is for!!!!!!

Tailgating is solid. The game atmosphere is outstanding. We didn't have the November crowds this year when we were going for a north title a few years ago. Kudos to the Department for their hard work, I can't wait for 2008!!!

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

I think we need to ditch Sirius as the entrance music for the sole reason that Nebraska does use it. I think we should come out to Pantera's Walk. Not only does it have the word Walk in the title, which goes well for a stadium walk, the whole song is about being a bad ***** and respect. If not that, maybe For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica. As far as I know, Walk isn't used by anyone else. I don't want to copy anything Nebraska does, especially with them coming to town next year.

I think when we do the intro, they should let the players all run out on the field and by the stands to the other endzone before they start the fight song. I also think the team should stay after every victory and sing the fight song with the band and the crowd. The band sings it now.

I think that Jeff Johnson does a pretty good job. The only complaint I have is that he starts the cheers and then interrupts them with "come ons", "I can't hear you", "louder" and it tends to throw everyone off and quiet them down for a bit.

I think the crowd needs to understand that we don't want to be loud while the offense is on the field, only the D. Some are just as loud. While Shaggy was kicking the FG to put us up 10, I swear people wanted us to get an offsides penalty and thus probably putting Shaggy out of range.

I think they should implement a no return policy for the game (maybe they are already implementing this) so if you leave the game you can't come back in. I think a lot of people need more motivation for staying and less for leaving (although I doubt it would have helped people stay at CU and then after we tied it up, we wouldn't have had everyone creep back into the game at the end of the 3rd to see one of the greatest games in Jack Trice history).

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

The smoke machines for the entrance were terrible. It looked very amatuer. The players couldn't see anything coming out of the tunnel and had to worry about running into photographers and the goalpost. Most games, it took almost a minute for the whole team to get out of the tunnel because of the confusion. I think Jeff Johnson leading cheers is in the same category as Cardinal/Gold Rules days. It would be really awesome if everyone participated, but, a lot of people are too stubborn and set in their ways or too oblivious to the whole thing to get involved. The Cyclone Power chant is one of the best "crowd participation" ideas we have ever had. I have to give credit to the students for getting it started during games. The weather spot was kinda cool a few years ago, but now it is just a joke. I wish they would just give a weather summary and put the doppler up on the video board and stop the cheesy pep rally stuff. The overall production of gameday is getting better, but there is a long way to go.

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

I wouls still like to see highlight videos of years past. Get the crowd pumped up showing JJ go end around against Iowa or the Billups punt return against Pitt w/ music in the background. Then maybe go to the team walk.

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

Did the new entrance grow on you?
The smoke thing was ok, but I was waiting for some of the players to run smack dab into the goal post.
How was the new donor tailgate lot?
G7 RULES! I have had a great time in this lot. Grass, lots of room, good people. The CF tailgate has gotten better and better every week.
Music selection before and during games?
Music is a sore subject for me. I guess I would rather just hear the band than most of the stuff they played. I will say that as the season wore on this got better. They did play some good stuff at appropriate times. For Whom the Bell Tolls for the opposing team’s 3rd down comes to mind.
    Concession improvements?
Concessions were terrible early on in the season. They were running out of everything by halftime, later in the year it seemed to improve.
    Others?
We had a parking attendant in G7 wearing Hawkeye gear. WTF?

We had SEVERAL hawk gear wearing attendants in G7.

Have to say too, having G7 only 1/3 to 1/2 full in given game, and having the parking attendants trying to pack people in rows like they're parking in downtown Manhattan, was a little "frustrating". Kinda hard to get tailgates together when they're lining you up.

They have lines and posts marking the parking rows. Good enough. Don't make an issue unless somebody parks wrong. But parking in the middle when the front is still somewhat empty - shouldn't be an issue IMO.

Re: Review of the 2007 Gameday Atmosphere

Tailgating: It's tailgating, it will always be good. However, with all of the 11:30 games towards the end of the season, the atmosphere in the grass lots wasn't as good as it has been in previous years. But you'll have that with those early games and with the teams losing record.

Entrance Music: I'm still not sold on the Bulls theme. It hasn't grown on me at all. I like the gladiator music they play just after much, much better.

Game atmosphere: For our record, I think the crowds have been amazing. The OU game was probably the loudest of the season. 2nd would be Iowa.

Game Music: Pretty bad. I like having the fans choose the 4th quarter song but give us some good choices!

Coaching: Some questionable play calls here and there but I will not complain at all about the ability of the staff. They were learning right along with the players this season. Towards the end of the year, they had some excellent game plans.

Players: Didn't give up. I have a lot of respect for that.

I hope the team can pull a stunner this weekend to close out the season. After this weekend, I'll be ready for 2008!
