Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

I've gotten 2 opinions, have 50% fracture in my end joint and I'm deciding on whether to do surgery or not. I'm not basing my opinion on replies here, so save the lectures, but am curious as to results people have had with it. co-worker has 2 relatives who have had it and weren't overly happy with the results, and the specialist I saw today indicated that there's not a lot of evidence to support anything, it's mostly theoretical.

If I splint it, I will not be able to fully straighten it and will most likely have arthritic problems later in the finger. If I do surgery, I will probably not be able to fully straighten it but theoretically it may help hold off arthritic problems in the finger going forward.

First surgeon recommended it, second one from a more highly recognized ortho place here played it more even and couldn't recommend or not recommend it. Maybe setting expectations.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

I would just let it heal as it will. I have broken three fingers playing bball and they are all a little weird looking but what the hell do I care.

Re: Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

i shattered my left thumb in a baseball injury and they did surgery on it, and put pins and screws in there and although i don't have full range of motion in it, it works just fine. The rest of my fingers have all been broken and or fractured and although a little mangled they are fine. But if it is really f-ed up, i suggest the surgery, otherwise its kind of a badge of honor.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

Broken or fractured all the fingers on my right hand, have just either taped them or splinted them. Similar to thatguy.

Re: Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

I've had a few fractures in my fingers near the joint. It's very difficult to get them back to fully functional. I've had surgery once, and the other two times did not. I'm not convinced that the surgery made a huge difference, but the time to heal was about the same regardless. You can always do the surgery later if it isn't healing how you expected. The rehab will have to start over again though. There's also a good chance you won't have full range of motion in that finger any longer, but fortunately it's the end joint and not the middle. Best of luck, I am just now hitting the end of therapy on a finger that I broke back in Feb

Re: Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

Thanks for the input guys, I just hate to throw down the money and do the surgery if it doesn't really make a difference. I ruptured this same tendon in college, splinted it and was fine after, but this time it took a good chunk of bone with it.

Re: Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

Shattered my right middle finder in high school. Two titanium pins in my finger still. I would recommend surgery. I had one of the worst case scenarios you could possibly have and my finger almost back to what it was before. They can do a lot these days and it could be messed up forever if you don't fix it now. The sooner the better cause your finger starts to heal immediately and it makes it tougher.

I hurt my pinky playing basketball last year. Don't know whether it was broken or not but I never got it checked out and it healed fine but I can't straighten it completely.

This is what I've done. Busted two thumbs, a pinky, and a middle finger. They all look weird as ****, but at least I have a good story to go along with them, they work well enough, get the job done, and I don't have many problems with them. It only sucks when weather messes with them, but that is few and far between. Not sure that surgery would do a whole lot on that part anyway.

Re: Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

I smashed my hand and thumb pretty bad and had surgery to reset everything. I don't have full range of motion of my thumb, but its better than nothing.

My dad broke his pinky and snapped a tendon. Drs told him they could cut it off at the last joint or leave it. The end of his pinky stands straight up now after 20 years.

Re: Anyone had pinky surgery or finger surgery?

I broke my pinkie as a kid, and the only thing that sucks about it now is that it dislocates all the time (fun for freaking out my boy and my wife) and when I go to use pliers, sometimes it catches and won't bend (which is a lot bigger pain in the *** than you would think).
