Thumbs up this year vs. last year

Let's assume we go 3-9 this year. I consider this a huge improvement over the 4-8 last year, even though it is worse record-wise.

I believe this for a couple reasons:
    1. We have 2 conference wins this year vs. 1 last year
    2. We have shown incredible improvement from game 1 to game 11, whereas last year, we played as bad in game 12 as we did in game 1.

Regardless of whether we beat KU or not, this season as a whole should create a wealth of optimism for 2008.

    Thanks Gene & company!

I've been pleased with this season. Winning two conference games in a row is a nice accomplishment for a rebuilding team. Last year we were a horrible team and we laid down far too often.

I think the real thing that made me happy was not giving up after Texas. In past years that would have been the end of the season. This year they came out and scared the hell out of OU and then picked up 2 more wins!

Exactly. See Seneca's senior year where after a couple of blowouts we packed it in for the year.

Nice to see the team still playing when they really have nothing to play for except for pride. I attribute that alot to character and to coaching.

Probably one of the biggest differences between this and last year is momentum. Last year the program as a whole seemed very stagnant. This year, everyone from Pres. Geoffrey to the person that just reads the scores in the morning paper can see positive progress. Building momentum toward "The Next Step" can be very powerful in every area of the program.

It's hard for me to say I'm "pleased" with the season. We lost to a not so good Kent State team and a rather aweful Toledo team - in very humiliating fashion. Regardless of it being a new staff - this is rather experienced team and to lose to that level of competetion is just aggrevating. Losing to a AA school is never a good thing - despite how good UNI is. But it is what it is...

I am pleased with where we're at and going. The main thing is the team is certainly improved. That's a major kudos to the staff, and the kids as well. Not the same squad we saw in September. Plus, some key graduating spots saw some good time with younger players - namely QB and receivers. We've seen an emergence of a frosh RB over a senior and juco. I'm a little worried about the D side of the ball, but have faith that Chizik being a defensive coach will/has developed depth there that will fill in at least adequately. Special teams? Well, I have little doubt we'll be holding our breath week in and week out next season as well - at least the first few weeks.

Overall, hope and excitement for next seasn are definitely on the rise and I feel a whole lot better November '07 than I did November '06

Re: this year vs. last year

Going into the Oklahoma game I assumed we would get blown out like Texas because I figured it would be hard to recover after a game like that. In the past I think they would have cashed it in but they didn't and I think that is a tribute to the coach Chizik and his drive to turn this thing around.

Re: this year vs. last year

Going into this season, under a new coaching regime, that all I wanted to see was improvement. Those factors that cost us games early in the year have been rectified, to some extent.

I am impressed with the scrappy nature of this team. In previous years, I don't think we could have come back after being down 21 points at the half. this team can take hits and not immediately collapse as I have seen in the past. The ISU team I have seen since the Oklahoma game has raised my expectations for the future.

Re: this year vs. last year

I would think the players see that the are lots of positions that are wide open for next season! This would certainly play into the "not giving up" attitudes. I also think that coaching has also played into our effort. But players that want to be on the field next year better not coast at all in this situation...too many guys fighting for playing time!

Re: this year vs. last year

I echo the thoughts of being displeased over the losses to Kent State, UNI, and Toledo. However, credit Chizik for keeping the players focused when they could have thrown in the towel after the Texas game.

Overall, I think the offensive line is better, but still not where it needs to be, and we seemed to have gotten better fundamentaly as the season progressed. The Special Teams needs to get better big time and we also need to improve team speed.

Overall I'm pleased and look forward to future years watching the program develop.

Re: this year vs. last year

I've only been able to see 3 games on TV this season. All of them wins. So in my opinion we look like a much better team than last year. However, I haven't seen our low points this season.

So what you are really saying is, to win, we need to be on TV more!

And you would be correct...I read somewhere that only once in the history of ISU football prior to last Saturday had we ever been down by 21 at half and come back to win...a game in 1989 as I recall.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: this year vs. last year

Don't look now, but "awful" Toledo is one win away from being bowl-eligible. Kent State turned out to be pretty bad, but we gave that game away. I said 3 weeks into this year that we were a better team than they were last year, and I'll stand by that, regardless of our record.

Last year we were just getting beat. This year, at least early, we were beating ourselves. We've been competitive in all but two games.

I'm pretty excited for next year.
