    DSM People's Closing

Just saw this online. I'm not a regular on the DSM bar scene anymore, but it was always pretty busy when I was in the last few years. Plus, had a fondness due to its link to the original in Ames. Wonder if the issue is with the management, or some other factor.

    Re: DSM People's Closing

    yeah...this bites.

I would imagine this had a lot to do with Tom's decision to close:
Sam Summers has been booking shows into People’s since the venue moved to Des Moines in 2007. Earlier this year Summers opened his own venue -- Wooly’s, at 504 E. Locust St. -- with a similar capacity to People’s (People’s capacity was around 900, Wooly’s is 700).

    Re: DSM People's Closing

He attributed it to low ticket sales. Well when you're booker is now taking acts to Wooly's people aren't going to come. You can only stomach so many 40 Ounces to Freedom Shows before you need to pull in decent gigs.

I did enjoy concerts though as I thought it was a good venue with solid acoustics.

Not many bars make it over 10 years in Des Moines.

Yeah, its hard for any place in Court Center with the rediculous leases they charge, but losing all the decent acts to Wooly's had to be the straw that broke the camel's back

    Re: DSM People's Closing

The acoustics were terrible at best. Concrete, wood and brick does not make for a good sound mix. I left a Cross Canadian Ragweed concerrt there a couple of years ago and could not hear until the next day.

    Your sentences seem contradictory.

Re-opens as "The Venue" and "The Exchange". The Exchange sounds interesting where prices of drinks will supposedly be dictated by supply and demand...ala...New York Stock Exchange.

Now a separate bar called The Exchange, it will have a New York Stock Exchange feel, with dynamic pricing on drinks. That means that if everyone is buying Jack Daniels, drinks with that liquor will go up in price. If no one is buying Absolut drinks, they will get cheaper. A ticker will run the length of the bar, updating patrons on pricing.

That sucks. Concerts there were always great. Saw Relient K and Anberlin there. Always felt so close to the show and great acoustics. That being said, Wooley's is larger and makes sense for bands to book there.

The prices will probably fluctuate between expensive and really expensive depending on demand.

So Johnny Walker Blue Label will be super cheap because no one is buying it?
