Season starts in ~2 weeks and this forum is quiet as a mouse

What's happening out there? This forum is quiet, quiet quiet - and the season opening Harold Nichols is only about 2 weeks away. I sure hope the buzz picks up; we need some Cyclone fever here. Help!!

The Wrestlers are gonna have to step up and win some DUAL Meets before fans get a "Buzz" as they say.

Re: Season starts in ~2 weeks and this forum is quiet as a mouse

Not a whole lot to talk about yet. Some of the big questions - will Meeks redshirt and is Gadsen going to be healthy, won't be answered until at least the Harold Nichols open. And the other big one - will Nickerson bring Finch and Goettl from "good" to "elite" won't really be obvious until Midlands.

We will win a lot more duals this year though, that much is for sure. The Iowa meet will still be ugly, we don't match up with them well at all. But our only hole will be maybe at 133, so in general we will be a much more solid dual team.

With Spangler out we lack any big horses that we can hang our hat on, but we have at least four guys (Finch, Goettl, Beard, Gibson) who have the chance to have a breakout season.

I can't wait to see how things shake out at 157, 165, and 174.

Those three weights will be crucial to success.

Did they decide to go with the different format for the national championship? Or is that still being debated?

Re: Season starts in ~2 weeks and this forum is quiet as a mouse

I have noticed that too, that its been quiet. I am personally excited, but a little nervous for the upcoming season. The schedule is not as brutal as last year. Removing Minnesota, Cornell, Missouri (twice) and adding Eastern Michigan, Michigan State, Penn, Drexel, etc makes the schedule more favorable. Having said that, means we need to win these.

I am excited to see what influences Nickerson and Coach Beau (S&C coach) have had on the team.
I am excited & nervous to see John Meeks wrestle.
The team is a year older and I hope to see improvement.

I like this coaching staff, whether you like KJ or not, TnT Paulsen, Jon Reader and Troy Nickerson is a great staff of assistants and if the head coach leaves, they probably do too. I am rooting for KJ and stability.

Re: Season starts in ~2 weeks and this forum is quiet as a mouse

Thanks all. I can't really disagree with most of the comments. I think this will be a very important year - we need to see the shipped turning around. We have some pretty committed wrestlers and KJ has put together a very solid coaching staff. Sure would like to some action in recruiting though; according to Intermat, Penn State has 2 commits (one top 10; both top 100), Iowa 2 commits (both top 100), Minnesota 2 (one top 10, both top 100, Ohio State 3 (1 top in nation, 2 top 100) and so on. We have 2 commits (1 top 100), which is not what one might see if the program was reloading. But like most posters, I am much more optimistic this year than last, KJ has improved his coaching staff in a very, very positive way. Now, if we could see some action on the recruiting end, I could see a future building for this program.

I think this is the big recruiting weekend for Iowa State, Iowa's was last weekend. We have Earl Hall, Jesse Doyle, and Eleazar De Luca (all at the OTC) coming in and Danny Woiwor is coming down also. I assume there are others, but that's all I know. Also hear Brandon Sorensen is close to making a decision and the staff is very interested in Brandon.

We also have the Kickoff dinner tonight at 6:30 and it is sold out.

Trent Paulsen is also the new CWC club coach and making a real effort to bring in additional senior level wrestlers, but that cost money. Either join or maybe participate in the Pin Pool (donate so much for every pin our starting wrestlers get), if they have success we pay a little more and if not you don't.

Unless you promote from within. Anyone think Trent could be ready to be a head coach? I know we are an established program and shouldn't need to grab a coach without head experience. What about if Bono came back?

I don't want to speculate too much, and just hope for a vastly improved group of kids. Beard with some lungs may be deadly this year for us. Not getting McCauley took the wind out of my sails for this season, as we lost an opportunity at a multiple championship contender.

This would be a nice addition. Watching him wrestle Meeks last year, I was surprised how much bigger Sorenson was. He is not a physical wrestler yet, but he has the size and skills to be very impressive.

They are saying Sorensen will be deciding soon and that he is not going to Iowa
