    Busy, stressful & exciting trip...

I quit my job of 10 years and took a new one and my wife and I decided to move back to Iowa. CO is great but the long trips to visit family have taken a toll. On Saturday, we'll be making the drive back to Des Moines to look at houses, interview daycares, and to catch the ISU vs MN bball game (hopefully). Also, my wife has an interview for a job.

We need to wait for our house to sell here before we buy but we at least want to look at areas and subdivisions to get an idea of where we want to be (anyone interested in a house?). We are most interested in the suburbs north and west of Des Moines. Can anyone comment on the strength of the market in those areas? I'm hoping those areas are having the same troubles as most so I can get a relatively good buy after probably losing money on my sale here in CO.

    Thanks!

Re: Busy, stressful & exciting trip...

Depends how far you want to live from Des Moines. I've lived in Boulder, West Des Moines and Ames. I live in a great little town north of Ames that is the best place I've called home (once I got over the lack of mountains and national parks). I would check Polk City, Bondurant, Slater, and Huxley. Short drive to Des Moines, short drive to Ames and a lot less of the b.s. It's a buyers market in central Iowa so you'll not only be paying less to live in Iowa but at an additional discount because of the shape of the market.

There's a lot of houses on the market right now every where. You should be able to find something if the seller is motivated. Especially before the Holidays since the next 2 months are historically light in real estate.

I live in Ankeny and can give you suggestions there if interested.

Congrats on the move. It had to be hard leaving CO but now, you'll be able to see the Cyclones anytime you want! :)

Would be interested in knowing what type of house you are looking for. Size, bedroom numbers, price range, etc.

I am biased, but our new area (Grimes, east side of 141) is very nice and has some new houses that have been empty for a while now - the market is just flooded. IMO, you're getting in at a perfect time, regardless of where you go.

We're very close to the '07 home show houses, which should help drive our property value up. Also, a new spendy development is going up across the street from us. The nice thing is, we're one of the smallest houses in the area - that always helps selling price. I think there is one or two houses in our area that are smaller for sale...not sure. The Mrs. has been watching those more than I have.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Yeah I live in Ankeny too. There are 6 houses on my street alone for sale. And my street is only 3 blocks long! You should be able to get a great deal on a house in DSM, there is tons and tons of inventory, and they sit on the market for a year sometimes.

We weren't really that interested in Ankeny, but we wouldn't rule it out either. We want to be closer to Des Moines. Clive, Johnston, Waukee, and West Des Moines are where we have spent most of the time looking on Realtor.com. We did like 1 place in Polk City but that is geting a bit far North of DM.

We also lived in Ames for 4 years post college. We love Ames but I don't think we could live there again. I think DM has more to offer given our age and situation.

I was back in Ames and Des Moines for the Oklahoma game this year. I did get a little homesick for Central Iowa. Ames and Des Moines have grown so much since I lived there. I would move back there if there was a market for my skill-set and career (Litigation Technology Consultant).

    Best of luck CyinCO!

We have looked at Grimes as well. Again, it is a bit far out of the city but if we found a great place in a great neighborhood, that really trumps all other factors.

If I get less busy today (it is a lot of work to quit), I'll PM you.

Ankeny is much closer to "Des Moines" than you think. Drive though when you are here. I think you will be plesently surprised.

We'll really miss CO. However, I won't miss Greeley. We already bought our 4 passes for Winter Park, so we'll be skiing this season whether we have already moved or not.

Like others have said, there are so many houses on the market you should be able to get a very good deal anywhere in the metro. What type of price range are you looking in? That will make a big difference.

Check out Iowa Realty -- Residential real estate in Des Moines and throughout Iowa they are the largest realtor in Iowa.

I live in West Des Moines so PM me if you have any questions or need any help at all.

I agree but my wife will most likely be working in West Des Moines near the Valley West Mall if the interview goes well. I work from home so she'll be the only one commuting.

I work in WDM about 6 or 7 blocks from Valley West. It takes around 15 minutes or so to get to work on a good traffic day. It isn't bad at all.
