    Complaints about officiating

I remember a few years ago reading about a study of some sort that was done on football officiating at the college level, that concluded that for any particular team officiating was really a wash. In other words, for any particular team, the calls for or against them would average out to nothing.

I think I agree with this. I've seen nothing but complaints about officials apparently "out to get us" this season, that they always favor the other team. And yet we've been on the plus side of two really, really big calls in the past two games. In the first one, Kansas State had tremendous momentum late in the game, legitimately scoring a touchdown that was perfectly valid -- the replay showed the player was well within bounds on his run. A good argument could be made that the momentum from KSU keeping the points from this touchdown could have helped them regain the lead and win the game. In the second case, the kicker for Colorado makes two field goals of 50 and 55 yards, both of which are negated for separate reasons. In this case, I agree with the reasons, but you have to admit that if the officials were really "out to get" ISU that they easily could have ruled one of them valid and tipped the game into overtime.

Officials do occasionally make mistakes, sometimes even big ones (the fifth down in the Missouri-Colorado game about 20 years ago comes to mind), but I do think that over the long haul things are a wash, even for us. I think officials have a hard job, do try to stay neutral, and succeed for the most part.

    Re: Complaints about officiating

Actually we've gotten the good end of officiating ever since the holding call in the Mizzou game last year.

    Re: Complaints about officiating

I'd disagree that we've gotten the better end of the calling in every game since mizzou last year (I'll cite Mizzou this year for example) but on a whole it hasn't seemed as bad as other years

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State,

    Re: Complaints about officiating

I think its a psychological thing where you focus and remember it when you lose, and forget about it when you win.

How many winning teams complain about the officiating? It happens, but not like when losing

    Re: Complaints about officiating

I don't know man...ISU has just had too many calls screwed up that directly cost us a game.

    - Seneca got in against FSU.
    - The field goal was good against bama.
    - Block/charge...need I say more

I'm just saying...seems like we've had our hearts ripped out a few times.

Did you happen to read Bill Simmons "article" this week on espn.com? I think the rule is usually "winning teams don't complain about officiating... unless of course that winning team is based in the Northeast, specifically within the cultural sphere surrounding Boston, Mass."

    Re: Complaints about officiating

And actually, I do believe that bad officiating does come out in the wash on the whole. For every 2007 Iowa State that happens to CU, there's a 1990 Missouri that happens FOR my Buffs.

Clearly though, that fact does not absolve fans from getting mightily ****** when they end up on the short end of the zebra stick. I'm living proof.

No one says you can't be ticked. Although maybe you should direct your anger at your receiver for not being smart enough to get his arse out of bounds to stop the clock.

Or knowing that since you don't have any time outs left, if you aren't past the first down marker, don't catch it in the first place! Or if you are the QB, throw it away! Or if you are the coach... tell the team that goal #1 is to get out of bounds... so nothing over the middle!

I think things tend to eveen out, but I have seen a lot of real head scratchers called or missed against ISU. Blythe getting his helmet ripped off in the TX game and not getting the call really did little to enhance my faith in officiating. The guy caught the ball, where else could the officials be looking?

    Re: Complaints about officiating

the colorado kick should have never been replayed, the game was over after they failed to wait for the signal from the official for the first field goal.

    Re: Complaints about officiating

It's ok to point out times that you get ripped by refs.

It is when people think that their team is singled out and ripped by refs that gets annoying.

    Re: Complaints about officiating

I think the crowd also influenced refs calls after the two bad calls. It was not just Gene. The refswee not going to let any questionable penalties be unflagged. A little booing did help.
