Re: CFTV: QB competition set, Rhoads after Sunday practice

As it should be. Let's face it guys, our QB's are not great. Good, maybe...and with better pass protection, maybe a little better. Problem is that all of the other Big12 clubs have Great QB's with the possible exception of Kansas. Yes, we have an awesome defense, but they can't be playing out their minds every single game - they're allowed to have a game where they make a mistake or two.

QB play HAS TO IMPROVE or we are going to be stuck at the 6 win mark, with maybe 2-3 conference wins, year after year after year. In my mind, we should be focusing on developing Richardson - enough of this competition crap. If you look at the games SR has played in, he's never thrown a pick, always led drives that resulted in a TD, and made accurate, sometimes awesome throws. My gut tells me he's not been getting the reps in practice, so he's not been (up to this point) in the competition for real. Heck, Rhoads even glossed over him during the summer camp season as an option at all - just tells me he was set on Jantz, with Barnett if he HAD to swap out Steele.

Now after this abomination of an offense, hopefully the coaching staff gives everyone a fair shake and let the chips fall where they may. It certainly sounds like they're in reset mode, which isn't a bad thing at this point. Better than sticking to a bad plan just because it was the only plan.

What sucks is, if the winner plays great all week and gets in the game and can't do anything.

If you ask the basketball analysts outside the state of Iowa I think you would be surprised to hear their responses. Iowa was pegged as a preseason top 5 team by one ESPN analyst and is ranked in the vast, vast majority of preseason top 25 polls

Agreed. But the truly good to great QB's will always find a way - you're telling me Seneca had an amazing line to hide behind? Dude was always running for his life.

The one game SR ever played in, Western Illinois, he didn't throw one pass. So while you're technically correct he's never thrown a pick, with that logic neither has ~97% of the other guys on the team.

    That is possible.

Who is the downtrodden person to the left of Paul in the video? CPR also did not seem too enthused.

Did Rhoads really say our protection was good? That's a bit unbelievable.

I was taken aback by that too as well. There were times when it was adequate, but a number of other times, particularly later where the OL was clearly just falling apart. I have to take him at his word and that's how they ultimately graded out. I thought they were actually doing a pretty good job in pass protection when they were fresh and then just imploded as the halves wore on. In the run game, they didn't get good push consistently at all from my two viewings of the game. Rhoads seems intent on the locus of the problems being with the QB. I generally agree, but the OL didn't have a good day and almost appeared to be quitting toward the end. With all the subbing maybe we have a cohesion problem. I guess I'm not sure, but I can see that it wasn't a positive Saturday.

Man, who would've thought we'd get extra bonus weeks of this exciting QB competition after the start of the season?! We are so lucky!! Can't wait for more exciting QB competitions next year!

He sure didn't. I guess I wouldn't either if I had to open up a QB competition going into game 8.

Yes, I forgot to note that. Like you guys, I had the distinct impression he wasn't exactly loving this whole deal with the QB competition. If we're feeling it, you KNOW he is feeling it in a big way. It's just an awful position to be in for Week 3 or 4 much less Week 8. It's a freaking nightmare.

That's true but the one drive SR led this year he took the 3rd team offense right down the field for a td, and he looked good running the zone read doing it. I thought he also looked very smooth and deceptive running the ball on the two times he carried it, and what has me excited is CPR said in the above interview that he's our best passer.

Re: CFTV: QB competition set, Rhoads after Sunday practice

Is this really a practice competition at this point? I guess I'm kind of baffled by that concept. Unless the coaches are hitting the erase button on their memories related to what they've seen out of each QB in practice since, say, last spring, I'm not sure what a practice competition does for you. There is ample evidence as to what sort of practice QB each of these guys are. Jantz was a good enough practice QB to [barely] win the job at the outset. Barnett was good a enough practice QB to be the second option. Etcetera, etcetera.

So if we’re going to re-open the competition, then let’s just get down to it: Who is the better GAMEDAY quarterback? Clearly, Jantz and Barnett haven’t performed up to Rhoads’ expectations, so that leaves just one thing he hasn’t seen: Richardson in real game action. Correct? He's seen all three in practice and two of the three in a lot of game action. So why do we need to go through this dog and pony show in week 9 of the season?

Look, I’m not lobbying for Richardson. I’m now firmly in the camp that believes there will be no solution to the QB position found this year. Period. I just want to stick with one guy from here on out and give that guy all of the game experience/confidence that you can at this point. I’m just perplexed by this supposed practice competition. I’m not sure what could possibly happen at the QB position in practice that is going to solve our gameday issues.

    Frustrated...

I wouldn't have called it good but it wasn't as bad as it seemed.

I doubt if Coach is thinking about the OL at the end of the game. He is probably focusing on the more competitive part of the game.
