Any lessons to learn from Oregon State?

Oregon State football: Beavers' turnaround most impressive of the season - NCAA Football - Sporting News

Just how bizarre has it been for the unbeaten and eighth-ranked Beavers? Coach Mike Riley has gone from a coach on the verge getting fired—to the leading candidate for national coach of the year. With essentially the same team.
“This is a unique group of guys,” Riley says, “with a unique perspective.”
This time last year, Oregon State was halfway to its worst record in 14 years, a three-win season that had many wondering if Riley could make the Beavers relevant again—while bitter rival and national powerhouse Oregon was sucking the very life from the room.
Mannion struggled in his first season as a starter, throwing 16 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, and worse, not embracing a quarterback's natural role of leadership. That’s why, coming off minor knee surgery, he was standing outside the football field house last weekend when the buses rolled up from the trip to BYU.
Why he was the first guy to wrap his arms around Vaz—the same guy he beat out this spring and fall camp for the starting job. Vaz played so well, he was later named Pac-12 player of the week.

I'm specifically interested in turning a turnover magnet qb into a good qb. :)

This. ISU would go 8-4 this year in the pac. 2 explosive offenses to defend. Big12 is a different animal. Crazy offenses (minus us and kansas) every week.

But other teams offenses aren't our problem. OUR offense is. If we can't score, we can't win.

It was similar last year in the pac, yet they turned it around, specifically on offense with a return qb with poor stats. And absolutely right, it's not the crazy offenses that are doing us in, it's about turning around an offense and seeing a qb improve from the previous year.

Arizona took it to Okie lite 59-38 and lost to Oregon State.

Anyways, it seems there are some programs out there who redefine themselves and improve with the same players and qbs from the previous year, I'd just like to learn the secret.

I agree... Remember our 1st drive against OSU yesterday? I wish every drive can go like that! We looked like an NFL team on that opening drive. After that, the intensity was just gone. (and nearing the mid-way point of the 3rd qtr., it was just a touchdown seperating us from tying) Maybe we need some Oregon State coaches to join CPR.

Re: Any lessons to learn from Oregon State?

They are taking advantage of a much easier PAC 12 schedule v a Big 12 schedule. You still have to show up and play and they've done that - beating a Wisc team that is down and beating a team like BYU that is never easy.

But aren't KSU's academic requirements/standards for taking recruits basically non-existent? Isn't it true that the Crypt Keeper used Juco talent (probably a lot of questionable "students" who would go ANYWHERE, including Manhatten, just to play) to build his program? ISU doesn't have that luxury.

Transfer to the PAC 12, where the teams are over-hyped, versus the Big 12, where they are under-hyped.

    "With essentially the same team"

I think the author was using this as a bad thing but I believe it's the reason for their success this year. Anytime a team returns a lot of starters from the previous year you can generally expect their win total to increase

Re: Any lessons to learn from Oregon State?

Oregon State has been decent to good the last decade or so. They even went 11-1 with BCS win one year. We have a ways to go before we have Oregon State type success over a period of time like they have.
