    Ladies over Pepperdine!

Season opening win over Pepperdine, who the ladies lost to last year. 70-59.

I wasn't there, but it sounds like they dominated 3/4 of the game as they were up by 37 at one point in the 2nd half. Pepperdine chipped away until the score was final.

Wieben had a solid game, 24 points.

    Re: Ladies over Pepperdine!

I plan to make it to a game or two this year. If we make the dance I'd really like to be at the games since we are hosting the first and second rounds here in Des Moines. It is always great to start off a season with a win especially against a team that beat you last year!

Great job ladies! I can definately see this team going all the way into the Big 12 season undefeated! (knock on wood)

Not to mention, but Wieben had 24 points with very limited action in the 2nd Half.

Ames, Ia. - Nicky Wieben made sure Iowa State could smile at end when its laugher against Pepperdine started getting tense.

Wieben equaled her career high of 24 points Sunday as the Cyclones opened their women's basketball season by building a 57-20 lead only to have Pepperdine whittle the final margin to 70-59 before a Hilton Coliseum crowd of 3,356.

The Cyclones put their reserves in 11 minutes remaining, and Pepperdine used a 32-8 run to close to within 65-52 with 2minutes to play.

Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly put his starters back in with 3 minutes left to assure the win.

"I wasn't trying to embarrass anyone by putting those kids back in the game, but it's a 15-point game with 3:40 to go and who knows what's going to happen," Fennelly said.

With the starters back in, Iowa State kept a comfortable lead through the final minutes.

"It was a little (close), but we just needed to take a breath and relax, and I think we had it at the end," said point guard Alison Lacey, who had 10 assists. "Everyone needs to calm down and we're fine."

The first 29 minutes saw Iowa State dominate in record fashion. The Cyclones set a school record for fewest points allowed in a half as they rolled to a 38-12 halftime lead. The previous low had come in 2005, when Iowa State allowed 13 points in the second half of a 77-28 victory against Nicholls State.

"The first 30 minutes, I don't care who we're playing, we couldn't have played any better," Fennelly said. "We guarded hard, we contested the basketball."

Iowa State pounded the ball inside and Wieben dominated early, scoring 19 points as the Cyclones sprinted to a 28-5 lead with 6 minutes 56 seconds left in the first half............

I plan on watching 5-10 games this year. I think we're going to be good.

    Re: Ladies over Pepperdine!

The starting line-up wasn't quite what was expected. Nisleit and Stuckey instead of Bolte and Ross. Was there any discussion or explanation?

Ross is still coming back from some back problems. I'm not sure about Bolte.

    Re: Ladies over Pepperdine!

He used that same starting lineup against Iowa Wesleyan, and at that time he said it was because he wanted more defense at the start of the game. I suspect the same reasoning applied to the Pepperdine game. It worked well against both Wesleyan and Pepperdine, so I wouldn't be surprised if this remains our starting lineup for the near future.
