recruiting: last year vs this year

i trust the coaches, first off. they know what they are doing. but does it seem like this years class has taken a step back from last years? i think last years class has the potential to be the best ever. there are so many guys from last year's class that i am anxious to see, especially on the d-line. there are not many guys in this years class that i'm too excited about. and i am a bit worried that we have not landed any LBs yet. hopefully we can still land 2 or 3 LBs. thoughts?

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

This will devolve into the usual recruiting discussion.

I am sure the staff isn't taking guys they don't think can play, especially all of the early ones.

It's all snark from here on out

You can accurately judge this years recruiting class in about 5 to 6 years. Enjoy your worrying until then.

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

These are things I am certain of:

    1. This class is not as highly rated as our last class on average, and may even be the most lowly rated of the classes we have had in Paul Rhoads' tenure here.
    2. I trust the staff to develop players more than pretty much any staff in the entire country.
    3. It probably won't matter that they are lowly rated, although it would have been cool to see a step up in recruiting and to speculate on how good that talent could be with our staff's ability to develop players.
    4. Players will gain stars and offers as the scouts get out and see their high school senior seasons. This happened quite a bit last year, especially.

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

IMO this class has a lot of potential. This class may not have the stars or offers of other classes but IMO there are a lot of hidden gems that our coaching staff did a great job of finding, and getting to become All In.

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

The thing that i look at is that this years class was developed a lot faster than last years. it shows that we got the players that we went out to recruit. We weren't scrambling in march to put players into positions. It might not have the star power as last years, but you can definitely tell that we got the people that we wanted and that's all that matters to me.

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

Tired of stars don't matter, wait 4 years, trust the coach. It is obvious that we are not competing with BCS schools for the same recruits. Possible explanations (these are speculative guesses):

    1. Wasn't Elliot our recruiter last year?
    2. Money not being spent for travel - siphoned off to lesser programs.
    3. We are too clean. Other schools have violations. We never do.
    4. Going for "all-in" guys first. If its us vs. NDst, they will allways be all-in for ISU.
    5. Using KSU and EIU philosophy - getting lesser talent and coaching them up. Make less mistakes and win. We are simply not a high choice due to climate and demographics.

When I watched the TTU game, it was painfully evident to me that they outrecruited us at WR, DL, QB, DB. We could have won, but we needed to play with fewer mistakes since they seemed to have a higher level of natural talent.

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

One of the coaches addressed this issue this week.

They are looking for players that are willing to work hard and be coached hard. They need the physical attributes that allow them to grow into their positions but also need the right mental attitude.

You never know when that 3 star guy will turn into the next Seneca or Sam Bradford.

Re: recruiting: last year vs this year

Go back 5 or 6 years and look at some classes and see how they panned out. Then take a look at rhoads first couple-he has had way more success getting results out of kids. Way less kids leave, etc.
