    State of Iowa State Athletics

Just saw a tidbit off of Iowa State's facebook that had a very interesting fact.

As of now, Iowa State has 5 teams in the top 25.

    #2 in cross country
    #14 in women's golf
    #22 in volleyball
    #24 in football
    #25 in men's cross country

I believe ISU is a preseason top 25 team in women's basketball and is rising in men's basketball coming off of a NCAA tournament 3rd round loss to the national champs, Kentucky.

Has Iowa State ever had the overall success in it's athletics as it has right now? It's remarkable how much ISU has grown since we had Chizik and McD running the two main programs.

I think ISU can rise to another level but it's exciting to have ISU have so much success.

I really believe, at least for the "money" sports, that having head coaches who really care about the city, state, and region is important. They can be honest about the strengths of the program without lying; their genuine passion is obvious.

Re: State of Iowa State Athletics

Iowa State was 23rd when the initial Directors Cup standings came out December 1 of last year but dropped all the way to 46th by the time the final standings came out in June. Considering how few of the 20 sports ISU competes in, that is pretty darn good.

Hopefully ISU can improve on this standing this year.

Re: State of Iowa State Athletics

I was just thinking about this and wondering how many programs have we had ranked in the top 25 over the last 12 months.

Off the top of my head

    Mens
    Basketball
    Cross Country
    Football
    Wrestling

    Women's
    Basketball
    Cross Country
    Golf (I think last year)
    Gymnastics
    Volleyball
    Outdoor Track & Field

At least 10 of our 16 programs. That's really good.

Wrestling is kinda like gymnastics. You don't have to have a fantastic record to be ranked. I could be wrong but I'm fairly sure we were ranked in Wrestling at least once.

Notice how often MontyBurns is on here now days. Oh I have no doubt that as soon as we have a rough year there will be a lot of MontyBurns types posting on here, but as long as we are doing well they will be in the woodwork.

Re: State of Iowa State Athletics

I think the biggest reason behind all of this is JP. Yes, he has made some blunders in some of the head coaching hires he has made, but overall he has done pretty well. It seems that ISU now has pretty good coaches in most sports, although I am sure there are a couple sports where that is still debatable.

I think there are two things where JP has really shined though. First, the fund-raising. I don't mean just getting people to contribute more, although obviously he has been very good at that. He also has been superb at marketing ISU, and creating new streams of revenue. The growth in the athletics budget during his time here has been amazing.

With that, there is the improvement in facilties. Prior to his arrival, almost all of the improvements went into football, because that was the money sport. With JP, there have been obvious improvements to the basketball facilities and football facilities. Plus, now we have improvements for soccer, softball, wrestling, golf and track and field. How far away can the imrpovements for volleyball and gymnastics be? The improvement in facilities should greatly help the recruiting and training of athletes, which hopefully will lead to even greater success in all sports.

I hope Jamie stays here for another 10 years or until he wants to retire. I think the best days of ISU are still ahead.

Besides all that.......he really gets under Hawk fans skins. You have to love that if you are an ISU fan....when even our AD can bug them.

Most of that is not by Monty's choice. But I agree, the "fire JP" threads have been pretty absent.
