    Re: Blum: Avoid Regret

    Excellent article by Mr. Blum.

One thing this team got away from last week was "manufacturing" yards on the ground. They settled for conventional runs out of the shotgun and didn't do enough to pressure K-State's defense on the boundaries. No sweeps to the running backs or Horne/West, only the one option look, etc.

Additionally, there were multiple times where Barnett read off a different guy than the offensive line blocked for. The best example was in the 3rd quarter when Barnett read off Arthur Brown but Farniok let the DT through. If that play is blocked correctly then Barnett sees he should keep and is up the left side for a huge gain.

The fortunate thing is, like Blum said, we have faced the top rush defenses in the Big XII and should have nowhere to go but up. Everyone on the team knows its a problem now it's taking that and bringing it to the field.

    Re: Blum: Avoid Regret

Unless Shontrelle does it before James comes back I think the odds we will see that 200 yard rushing day out of an ISU back are pretty slim for a while. CPR spreads the carries around and I am more than okay with that. There is a little bit of going with the hot hand, but at the same time he does a great job of keeping the backs fresh throughout the game. That may very well pay off as ISU faces some of the less able defenses at stopping the run.

Of course there is always the fluke day when a back breaks 2 or 3 long ones while already having a solid day besides...

On a side note, let's hope James comes back - and at full strength - very soon. ISU is going to miss what he brings, especially his receiving out of the backfield, in the next couple of games.

    Re: Blum: Avoid Regret

We missed James White against KSU since the holes were so small. Looked like JB should have run the ball more in the game after faking the handoff as there seemed to be openings. It was interesting that the first two scripted two plays were JB runs.

I don't know how Woody is doing (in terms of back to 100%), but I would love for use to use him more as a traditional back and not just a battering ram. His ball protection and desire to get those extra yards could really surprise us, I believe. Kinda like Weisman has done.

This is a great point, all the way around. I also doubt anyone gets over 200 because of the shared carries. But found it interesting that it has been 11 years since Ennis eclipsed 200.

Get this: it has been 11 years since Iowa State has had a 200 yard rusher, yet Troy Davis went over 200 NINE times in the 22 games he started.

Shontrelle, if you're reading, please feel free to put a stop to that non-200-yard streak this Saturday.

Troy was a gifted runner with a low center of gravity who ran behind a great, great run blocking line. I loved the quote by an opposing defender that tackling Troy was "like trying to tackle a cube". You may knock him sideways but he just kept moving down the field.

I think we see a huge game out of Nealy on Saturday. Sounds like the pink eye really hampered his vision, I cant imagine a running back being effective with swollen eyes. He has the speed to make the corner, he showed that against KSU.

Someone needs to bring the grade A rush effort to this team as the oline is just getting by.

That was a difficult read.... I don't like to be reminded about how good we could have been and then showing how similar this team is... Now I'm scared.

Why do we not change formations to manufacture holes? Bring a TE in motion as a lead blocker, etc?

Interesting point. I was just saying this to friends the other day how could run the ball so well in the Troy Davis years when the program was struggling to win. Now we are winning somewhat consistently but can't run the ball as effectively as we did in the past?
