    Iowa State basketball preview

Hello Cyclone Fans- I write for Baylor's 247 site and I come in peace. I'm doing previews of all the Big12 teams. Hoops is my passion. I'm going through the Big12 alphabetically and wanted to get some input from the hardcore base as to how accurate this preview is. Would love for you to offer constructive criticism on this if you have time.

Should be a great year- Kansas will be favored but I think there are 8 pretty good teams in the league and 2 teams that will lose a lot of games (TCU and Texas Tech).

Surprised you spent more time talking SDW than Naz Long. I would guess that most around here would peg Long as the one more likely to see any real minutes this year.

    Re: Iowa State basketball preview

You can't talk about Chris Babb without talking about his defense. Last year game in and game out he drew the toughest defensive assignment and he frustrated players from 6'1" to 6'10". He probably will get more help on the defensive end with guarding the front court players but he will still be on whoever is the opponent's front court scoring threat. While he didn't have the stats that wow people on the defensive end (blocks or steals), he limited many offensive threats by simply crawling in their jock straps and denying them the ball. He should have been a serious contender for D POY last year in the conference.

Also Tyrus McGee is a shooter but what he brings to the team from the 6th man spot is energy. He is a hustle player who makes the scrappy plays. He ends every game with the most floor burns of any player suiting up.

    Re: Iowa State basketball preview

Probably the most accurate, most in-depth preview done by an outsider. Kudos for doing your research/ just plain having some Big12 wherewithal. A couple notes:

you need to mention defense in your section about Babb. Babb limits the shots of the opposing teams best scorer. Yes, he's a streaky sharpshooter offensively, but he's always solid defensively. He doesn't get a lot of steals, blocks, etc, but he also doesn't commit many fouls. He simply holds prolific scorers (usually the 2 or 3, but sometimes the 1 or 4) well below their average. He guarded Mcgruder, Pledger, J'Covan Brown, Jeremy Lamb, etc. Hoiberg switched Babb over to Pierre Jackson at the half when they played in Ames last year - I think Jackson only scored 6 pts (or something) in the 2nd half. He should have made the conf all-defensive team last year.

SDW won't likely get too many minutes - unless their are injuries, ineligibility, etc.

with Bubu being suspended, Naz Long will likely be the 2nd string PG. He has supposedly been a delightful surprise. Might ultimately be a combo guard.

Gibson has incredible hands and touch on his shot. Needs to work on his defense and rebounding. If those come a long, he'll be tough to keep off the floor.

Booker is likely our best post-defender (not saying a whole lot). He had almost twice as many blocks per minute as Royce last year. He can hit a three with ease if his feet are set.

Personally, I think McGee has the potential to be the 3/4/5 scorer this year.

That's really all I can add - nice work!

It is a great point- I will add that to the preview. Babb did the best defensive job on Denmon I have ever seen. It's a shame that got wasted in the end- because I can't stand Missouri and his job would have received a lot more recognition had you all pulled it out.

Will add more detail on McGee as well.

Not many people have seen Naz Long play. He spent the past year playing for St. Martin (I think) in Canada (he's from the Toronto area). Before that, he played behind Myck Kabongo at Findlay Prep. A few fans got to see him this summer in a YMCA league playing with other college players who spend the summer in central Iowa - but it's really a pick-up league. Those who saw him play there say he probably took the games more seriously than anybody - as in he's a real competitor, and always attacked on offense.

I've seen scouts characterize him similar to this...
good length (6'-4") at the PG position
not super fast with the ball but very solid - doesn't turn it over much
    "smart with the ball"
    "makes the right play"
    "great leadership"
    developing as a scorer

He might ultimately be a combo guard if his scoring translates to the college level, and of course if there is a better "true" option on the team. If you are really ambitious, you might ask Tariq Sbiet (@Tariq_NPH) as he seems to have watched him quite a bit over the last year +. He, like other Canadian analysts say we got a "steal".

I think that the article if very accurate. ISU is being underrated once again. I'm not saying top 3 but they won't finish 8th . 4th or 5th are in the cards
