Jake Knott on stopping OSU: Football talk

I talked with Jake yesterday about Oklahoma State. I thought that you football junkies might like this, as Jake describes why stopping the Cowboys is so difficult on a defense.

“They have a lot of plays that are based on the quarterback’s read. If they make a good read, there is no way you can win basically. They will do one play that I specifically remember where they read the MIKE linebacker on a draw-read. The running back will just wait back there and if the MIKE linebacker comes to stop the run, he’ll just throw it to the third wide receiver who the MIKE would have to cover. So either way, if the quarterback reads it right, the MIKE is wrong. You either have an open gap or a wide-open wide receiver. It’s a thing that a lot of teams find difficult to do because you don’t have a quarterback that has that type of experience who can make those types of decisions.”

Interesting. Good thing they have inexperienced qb's at the moment.

So does this also mean our LBs should be jumping in and out of the line before the snap, aka Ray Lewis?

Re: Jake Knott on stopping OSU: Football talk

Package plays. I would explain it but it takes time and Chris Brown of Grantland/Smart Football has already done it. It's the future folks. OSU and WVU are the two most prolific teams who do this sort of thing though there are a lot of teams doing it. I am pretty sure we have done it a few times.

He is "day-to-day." If you made me bet right now I would say Walsh starts but Lund may go in later.

isn't this offense pretty much the same as the run and shoot offense that June Jones ran at Hawaii? It sounds very similar

We know well what having a dinged QB is like...Steele Jantz was a comeback hero last year until the UCONN game and injury and he just wasn't the same. We can only hope a little of that bad luck is reversed and OSU's QB lets a few sail into Jacques' or another secondary player's hands.

That was what I was thinking when I read Jake's comments.

Re: Jake Knott on stopping OSU: Football talk

Sounds like a good way to maximize the importance of the QB position on an offense. How would that be good for us?

Reading his statement makes me think we are actually good.

Lunt might be back. But he might not.

Re: Jake Knott on stopping OSU: Football talk

Sounds like it'll be a lot of "bend don't break" type of game. Games like that make me nervous. Not that I'm not confident in the D, it's just stressful.
