    Resume Advice

Hey everyone I was just finishing up my resume and figured I'd see what everyone had for advice as to what to include/not include. I did talk to my adviser and he gave me a general idea. I'm a senior at ISU in Ag Biochem and have 3 years of relevant work experience on campus. I graduate in December. So far I have this:
    • Keep it to one page
    • Jobs/experience not relevant to career is not necessary (ie grocery store worker, stuff like that)
    • High school stuff isn't necessary
    • No typos

That's just some of the stuff I've been told. I was unsure if I should list references available by request or to just put my references. Also I was unsure of the amount of references. I have 3 or 4 good ones.

I'm also going to the career fair Tuesday. I'm not really sure what to expect, but I plan on just talking to some companies and handing out some resumes. Researching ones I am interested in beforehand. That kind of stuff.

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Re: Resume Advice

Your bullet list is pretty spot on. Once you have more experience the "one page" simply isn't possible.

I don't waste space on reference because they'll ask for them anyway on all applications.

    Re: Resume Advice

Your 4 bullet points are great.
Keep your resume very succinct and organized. Don't want to be rambling on with a bunch of nonsense in a messy manner.
For my references I had them on a separate, unattached page just in case they wanted them at that time. I listed 3 personal and 3 professional references.

    Re: Resume Advice

I generally have references available upon request. Might want to have them on a separate sheet of paper for the career fair in case they ask for them. Good luck finding work. Ag Biochem is a good place to be in.

dont put your gpa unless its over 3.0

good luck with the search...but it does seem kinda late to be starting that process with graduation in 2 months

hopefully youll find some employers looking to fill positions this winter and not in the future or with interns

TON of Ag related jobs just posted at the end of the 3rd quarter (the past two weeks). They'll look to fill them before the next growing season. Essentially, they'll want people in place Jan/Feb.

    gotcha

in my field if u dont have a job lined up 2 months before graduation u can count on only having slim pickings in terms of companies to choose from

    Re: Resume Advice

Nice the separate sheet sounds like a good idea, it would save a good amount of space. I have listed lab protocols I am experienced with and also lab machinery I am familiar with. My adviser said he might think of listing academic scholarships in one section, but I only have 3 or 4 and they are just college entry ones. I'm not sure it is worth an entire section.

    Re: Resume Advice

also dont use a resume template

    create your own

ive helped my firm with some recruiting events and i see why they say that

the template ones blend in instead of jumping out as well as making you look like you put it together at the last second instead of taking the time to make ur own

    Re: Resume Advice

I tried to start looking for stuff this summer, but was basically told it was too early I would have better luck later. Basically they said if a position was open they would want someone to fill it sooner rather than later.
