    Season in perspective

I don't know what's going to happen against KU but let's put this season in perspective. The first 1/3 of the season was painful. You could see the effects of new coaches and new players learning a new system. Signs of promise but they were small. Suddenly in the middle 1/3, you could start to see signs show up on the field. Toe-to-toe with OU and MO...they were getting it, just not quite there. Suddenly it comes together against K-State. In some ways I'm glad yesterday played out like it did. Have the great win, then don't play that way for a half and get beaten pretty badly. Then bring back the effort from the week before in the 2nd half and see the results.

Yesterday had to be light bulb moment for the team and realizing not only what it takes on every snap but seeing the rewards for giving that effort and the difference it makes on the scoreboard. The progress this season has been remarkable if you ask me and I can't wait to see how much better things get.

    Re: Season in perspective

Good post, it was nice to see the team play the full 4 quarters with as much fight as the first. That was one of the big things that caused us issues in the previous regime, the team died at the end. These guys made some mistakes, but they kept fighting after it and look how things turned out.

Now lets go and stick with KU and shock the nation.

    Re: Season in perspective

I think this team showed a lot of heart today and Gene believed they could do it. It shows a lot of a team to be able to come back from being down as much as they did and the Clones kept it going. They weren't satisfied with tying so they kept it going and took the lead. This team may not of had the most skill at the beginning of the year but when you have a coach that believes in his team and the players believe, I think that goes a long ways.

I said I would be disappointed with 3 wins this year but the heart & continued improvement of this team is awesome.

I like that the coaches let Robinson earn his way back on hte field after
early season fumble. The dog house used to be the whole season. I love it that we have him, AA, Bates 3 more years.

    Re: Season in perspective

I think we left some games on the table, but at least this program is being built the right way. I also have to say that the fans were awesome yesterday. I couldn't believe so many people stuck it out during that terrible first half. But wow... What a game and comeback.

I dont' know what Chizik said at half time but wow. Two different teams. The first half it seemed like only a few came to play.

    Re: Season in perspective

I have to wonder how the hell this team ever lost to Kent State and UNI at the beginning of the season. Lack of focus, unfamiliarity with a new system, etc... I think this team reeks of the '06 Colorado team. They lost to a decent 1-AA team, had a horrible record by the end of the season, but still managed to keep themselves in several of their games. Next season, with the slightly easier South schedule, who knows where this team could go?

I love how, in the past month, we haven't heard any posters complaining about how this team has absolutely no talent.

Coach Chizik is showing how great coaching/gameplan can mask not having talent. McFarland deserves every dollar of his paycheck.

To win a D1 football game you either have to have superior talent, superior coaching, or both...I would argue we are living mostly on superior coaching at this point and that we still have less talent than the big12 teams we have faced this year.

    Re: Season in perspective

Its been quite a roller coaster ride.

The most notable is the effort and heart of the players, and Chizik getting them to stay competative and improving. It would have been easy for this team to go down the tubes after the Texas loss. They have the opportunity to finish the season 3-2 and on a high note.

You really cant discredit the losses the to kent state, UNI, and Toledo. The Clones went above and beyond the call of duty to lose those games. Given those 3 games back now they probably go 2-1. Too many turnovers vs UNI...not being able to capitalize with 3(?) redzone turnovers forced vs kent state, and a complete meltdown in vs Toledo.

    Re: Season in perspective

The first few games had a very limited playbook. We ran no screens, few slants, options to outside. They kept it simple and it was easier to defense. The players did not play tough and the fans wee unexcited. No way should we have lost to Kent State in retrospect. We were not readly to play in that first game.

    Re: Season in perspective

I'm not happy with our overall win total but I am very excited about the trajectory of the program under Chizik. I think maybe I underestimated how much work would be necessary to get us on the upswing after the last regime. I do expect next year to be a break-out type of year for the Cyclone football!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    Re: Season in perspective

I didn't think we'd get 2 conference wins so I am happy with that. But I also thought we would get more than 1 non-conference win. But it is nice to have a team that improves as the season goes along.

I'm really excited to see what this team can do next year with the easier schedule.

What a way to cap off the season if we could give KU a run for their money.
