    Time of Possession

After getting demolished in time of possession today, we are losing the battle this season by over 35 minutes. We have lost that battle the last 4 games after winning the first two. If my math does me right, we are losing 197 minutes and 48 seconds to 162 minutes and 12 seconds.

an unfortunate side effect of our offensive tempo. How many plays per game are we averaging compared to our opponents? I would guess that is closer.

ISU is losing that 446-418. About 74-70 per game which is not that bad at all.

    Re: Time of Possession

It's definitely a problem. Some of it is because we don't move the ball effectively and I think some of it is because we run too much jet tempo. Under Herman we would change tempo more often, I want to see some of that this season.

    Re: Time of Possession

Well then I am glad the win goes to the team who scores more often and not the team who simply possesses the ball the longest. If I remember right (and maybe I don't) we often won the TOP when Chizik was the head coach. On the season so far we've run 418 plays vs 446 for our opponents (a difference of 5 plays per game). Our TOP/G is 27:02 vs 32:58 for our opponents.

Yeah not as bad when you look at it that way. I've just noticed it the past 3 games and would still like to narrow that gap.

    Re: Time of Possession

I think our problem is consistency of offense (yeah I know, captain obvious). We have the capability to break big plays, but on average we aren't yet up to par. In games where we can get more plays, in the 75-80 range, there is more opportunity for us to break one. When we are held below 70 plays, it's fewer opportunities for a receiver to get behind the defense or for a runningback to bust through the secondary.

And part of the problem was our defense couldn't get themselves off the field. Obviously they were tired in the second half, but KSU had two long drives in the first quarter - one went 12 plays, the other went 14 plays. If the defense is spent on the opponents first and third drives of the game, then we need a new S&C staff.

    Re: Time of Possession

However, in conference play we are getting beat 236-175 in total plays run, about 20/game.

    Getting beat 111:27 - 68:33 in TOP in conference play...nearly 3 quarters.

    Re: Time of Possession

Too many 3 and outs with that fast tempo has the defense on the field way too long. Our D is good but you can't expect them to hold down potent offenses for that long when they are on the field for two-thirds of the game

This is exactly what I was thinking. I believe we have the best defense in the B12 but after being on the field so long, you can't be expected to keep someone from scoring. Anyways, I think the jet tempo sometimes hurts, although I do like it, but it seems like (I don't know the actual stats) when we have pass plays during fast tempo, we don't have too many completions.

I'd be curious to know what our 3rd down conversion percentage is. It seems like we dont have very many sustained drives.
