    Jet Tempo

We lost the time of possession battle today 41 minutes to 19. I like the jet tempo, but I think it's painfully obvious we need to slow it down sometimes too. It's incredible that the defense played that well being on the field that long. One thing Herman would do is go quick for a couple plays, and then slow it way down. I don't understand why we don't do that.

    Re: Jet Tempo

The time of possession had more to do with the fact that we went 3 and out multiple times and they were able to run the ball effectively.

    Re: Jet Tempo

True, but if you look at the stats they didn't run that many more plays than us. They did run more plays then we did, but not enough that the TOP should have ended 2-1. Had we slowed down the offense some and ran the ball more, our defense wouldn't have had to have been on the field so long.

    Re: Jet Tempo

Jet has its place and when we run it we have them off guard. It is my favorite part of a balanced attack. It is also a huge benefit for the offensive line. The worst thing for linemen are th 20 second delays in a stance?

    Re: Jet Tempo

I remember all our jet plays as runs to the outside... Rush to the line of scrimmage to run a slow developing outside run play. Seemed like jet worked every time to set us up for 2nd and long.

    Re: Jet Tempo

Honestly, when we get the jet tempo going, the offense seems to start clicking.

    Re: Jet Tempo

If we can connect on some passes and get the running game going a little better, the jet tempo will be fine. It wouldn't have looked any better to rush for two yards then throw two incompletions if we waited another 20 seconds between each play, and it would have made only a small difference in our TOP.

    Re: Jet Tempo

I think Barnett looks more comfortable in jet tempo and the offense does work smoother. Don't know why. Maybe he has to play and doesn't have time to think too much. Maybe it just puts the defense on its heels. IDK. But it does seem to work.

TOP is important, but getting first downs has a bigger impact. Three runs will kill 90 seconds, but if you then punt... Rather go jet, get a longer drive and some 1st downs. And god forbid, score.

    Re: Jet Tempo

The defense was their own enemy today getting off the field. Working the offense to 3rd and long is great until you let Klein just scramble for the first down.

    Re: Jet Tempo

I really like the jet tempo. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it is really effective and can wear down the opposing defense. Time of Possession is really an outdated statistics since so many teams run the jet tempo. If one defense is on the field for 40 minutes and faces 55 plays and the other team is on the field for 20 minutes and face 55 plays, then there is no difference in overall tiring of the defense.

Right. At some point, they had to help themselves off the field. That didn't happen nearly enough.

    Re: Jet Tempo

I think that the jet tempo is an overall success. I'm a little disappointed when we slow it down and give the defense the time to substitute based on situation.

    Re: Jet Tempo

I think the issue with our offense is not the style necessarily but the way we present it. No misdirection, no reverse action for the whole game, letting the KSU defense just sit there and Tee up on us when we ran plays. Another big issue toward the end of the game, the defense gave the offense two opportunities to take the ball down the field and we failed miserably - we tried to go for 20 yard pass plays instead of worrying about getting the first down, then when it was 3rd and 10 we figured out we needed to get the first down....it is a confusing offense to watch at times. We know they have the imagination to create some pretty deceptive plays..with less then two minutes left in the game why didn't we try some gadgetry? Just odd.

Erik...I love you Man. You are the eternal optimist and one of my favorite posters. That said...this is flat out wrong. Wally's boys can only do so much. We are 4-2, 1-2 in the conference and, while still early, it's starting to appear our 2 conferencr losses are to 2 of the top 3 teams. If we haven't been the better team in every game we've played this year, we've at least been even. We lost to Tech because our D finally gassed after being on the field too long...not because they couldn't get themselves off, but because the O kept going 3 and out. We completely abandoned the screen. We did the exact same thing today.

It's not that we can't get OFF the field, it's that we can't stay ON the field.

Jet tempo works great...as long as we're spreading the field, or using the opposing D's aggressiveness against them. We have completely abandoned that the last 4 weeks (TCU included), and the result is one FUGLY offense.

Two of KSU's first three drives of the game were long drives. One went 12 plays and another went 14. And ISU had maintained a scoring drive over that period as well. The defense played consistent throughout the game - they couldn't keep KSU from picking up first downs from the opening kickoff. Excluding the kneel-downs to end the game, ISU only held KSU to three drives of three or less plays. The defense allowed KSU to play their game all game long.
