It Gets Better - Our Schedule is Frontloaded With Good Defenses.

As we melt down, I thought I'd look into some stats. Here is how the 11 FBS teams that ISU will face this season stack up in total defense so far this season.

    #2 Texas Tech (210 yards/game) - ISU had 189 yards against them
    #9 TCU (274 yards/game) - ISU had 350 yards against them
    #17 Oklahoma (303 yards/game)
    #21 Iowa (315 yards/game) - ISU had 344 yards against them
    # 28 ISU (338 yards/game)

    #44 Kansas State (363 yards/game) - ISU had 233 yards against them
    #46 Oklahoma State #46 (364 yards/game)
    # 54 Tulsa (377 yards/game) - ISU had 441 yards against them

    #74 Texas (404 yards/game)
    #97 Kansas (446 yards/game)
    #102 West Virginia (460yards/game)
    #120 Baylor (571 yards/game)

We have faced 2 of the top 3 defenses in the league already, and some decent non-conference defenses in Iowa and TCU. Our schedule is very much front loaded when it comes to defense. Let's not kid ourselves, our offense is not very good. However, other than Oklahoma it is all downhill from here. We will get our offense going against the remaining teams and we will get more yards and score more points. This season is far from over.

    Perhaps that's the silver lining?

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

TCU is in the Big 12. It doesn't matter who ISU plays, they have no offense. It won't matter how the opposing defenses play against other teams because ISU still won't be able to score.

We also face some pretty amazing offenses, that can hang half a hundred on you before you blink. Our D will keep us in most games. We'll need a couple of games where the opposition turns it over a few times + a gimmie against KU.

Although our schedule is frontloaded with supposedly good defenses, it is also backloaded with high octane offenses.

Instead of losing 27-21, we could just as easily be dropping games 45-42. I'm hoping as much as anyone for an 8 win season still, but it will not be easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Counterpoint: Turn on the WVU/Tech game.

Thanks, counterpoint taken. Unfortunately, as a lifelong Cycone, I have this ingrained response of "waiting for the other shoe to drop."

Almost like the Charlie Brown Syndrome, and it will take a while to train myself out of that mentality. Probably no better coach than Rhoads to cure it, though!!

I will be happy if we get to 6 wins. If they get 7 or more, which is clearly possible... I'll be estatic.

Re: It Gets Better - Our Schedule is Frontloaded With Good Defenses.

What is really frustrating is how close to being a top 10 team ISU is this season. ISU had chances to win in the 4th quarter in both of their losses. TTU and OU are making ISU look like its been tougher than many think. At the same time, I'm worried about making it to a bowl...

You really think we are a 6 win team at best? You think we will only win two of Kansas, Texas, Okie State, Baylor, and WVU?

I think that if we win 6 I'll be satisfied... We look like we can win the rest of the games ... or lose them. KU might be the one exception but they played us tough last year.

I wonder if those D are that bad. Playing West Virginia may inflate those stats...

To be perfectly honest there is not what I would call a great defensive team in the whole conference. That's good in one respect because you should be able to score points on any team in the conference. It's also bad because in a lot of games you're going to have to score a lot of points to win. Twenty one points wasn't enough against K-State and won't be enough against most of the teams on the remaining schedule.

I don't see any way we don't get at least 6 wins but on the other hand I'd be surprised if we get more than 7
