    Run Play Calling

I was talking to my buddy during the game and the same thing has been really bugging me about our run play calling. Remember the play with the odd pistol formation when Aaron Horne busted a big run? Why is it that we run the read option up the middle so often? Keep getting the ball to the outside with James and Shontrelle, they are too fast for average defenses to contain!

I agree, I would like to see more pitches outside, to open up the middle.

Open up the middle, and then do the zone read

    Re: Run Play Calling

I'd like to see more of the 2 back or 3 back sets, though not the pass play that resulted in a sack on that 3 back formation. We're not going wide on most of the D in the Big XII unless our wide receivers/tight ends and tackles block better. They were adequate today, but we need more O for some of the teams coming up. Good win anyway.

I agree that the blocking on the outside has to be better, but that opens up the screen/read-option game if we can get some big runs to the outside.

    Re: Run Play Calling

This was a great play calling game by Mess. It sure helps to the offense get in a rhythm when they are not going 3 and out every series.
Deep ball was working, read option was working, reverses working, everything was working. This is huge in keeping the defense honest. We just needed a game for Mess to give us a chance to win, and he did that.

We will be an underdog in every Big12 game(minus Kansas), so these scrappy, sloppy wins are what we will have to deal with. That is who we are(for now).

Good thing we didn't fire Mess after last week!

    Re: Run Play Calling

Sloppy and scrappy describes KSU's entire season last year. I'll take it.

I imagine the D ends are covering the backs most of the time on the read, because they are proven threats to take it the distance.

I do like the two and three back sets, and hope to see more variety in the running sets.

    Re: Run Play Calling

We did do that a lot vs. Iowa, and it didn't work. My guess is Mess runs a pretty even amount of inside and outside reads and as fans we just don't notice it a lot. Remember too that we give away if it's an inside or outside read before the play (if their is only one running back) so therefore teams overplay it and a lot of times our running backs try to bounce it back inside. With that formation their is a risk of both an inside or outside run, so maybe the defense played it differently.

What? I didn't think this win was scrappy/sloppy at all. We were easily the better team on the field, and there were very few times where I thought it would get tough. But each time we managed to step it up and put it away.

    Re: Run Play Calling

A lot of those inside zone reads help to open up the runs to the outside. That's partly why it worked.

And we don't give away inside vs outside zone based on the number of runningbacks in the backfield.

I didn't feel like todays game was sloppy. Scrappy, okay I'll give you that but not sloppy. I thought we played pretty well, aside from some questionable tackling at some points.
