    Re: Blum: September Shank

ISU is 3-1 and we are not forgetting it, however the 3 wins were against weak opponents. SJ is 0-5 against Big12 foes, ISU needs a QB that can win against better talent.

    Re: Blum: September Shank

    A couple things.

    - Barnett does have a weaker arm, but he can at least throw it 30 or 40 yards, which is plenty to take the top off the defense. We don't need the guy who can throw it 70 yards and miss, we need the guy who can throw it 30 yards and complete it.

    - I agree that the run game would be immensely helped by completing some deep balls, but, it would be helped just as much by Steele making better choices in the zone read. I would say we scrap the zone read all together if we keep Steele at QB. If we want to keep it, we should go with Barnett.

I think the run game would be helped most if the line showed a little more interest in blocking people.

One thing that wasn't mentioned when ISU beat Texas after the beatdown by OU was that ISU didn't have any turnovers, while Texas had three I believe.

Great point. Also, I am not necessarily advocating for Steele over JB, just that it's a complex situation with many moving parts that can only get better from last week. Or so we hope!

    Thanks for reading as always.

It isn't all about how far a QB can throw it. A big part of arm strength is being able to put the needed velocity on shorter throws.

    Re: Blum: September Shank

It's very similar to basketball. If you can't hit any 3's, teams are going to pack it in on you and make it hard to get into the lane. We've got the same problem right now on the football field.

    Great article Blum.

I think I can sum up our offense in two words : vicious cycle

    Re: Blum: September Shank

For some reason your column made me think of this classic. See Blum as Bacon and the majority of CF posters as the panicked crowd.

I don't think it is quite as easy as you put it Blum, this isn't just a shank in the woods. We have seen symptoms of these problems in previous games but the talent hasn't been there in the opposition to make ISU pay. But I also don't think it is as catastrophic as many have spun it here.

    Re: Blum: September Shank

The Cyclones got buried 52-0 by the Sooners. The next week the Cyclones traveled south to the Lone Star state to battle a ranked team with the conference's best defense. The Cyclones walked out of Texas' Memorial Stadium with nearly 400 yards in a 28-21 win over the Longhorns; their first win over a ranked road team in 20 years.
This always seems to be common theme in the football program, but when expectations begin to rise the team falls flat on their face, however, when expectations are low the team is able to rise to the occasion and are able to surprise some folks.

Haha...not enough my friend, not enough. But I did manage to fire a 69 at Blank this summer. Granted Blank is the Western Illinois of Des Moines golf courses.

Nice article Blum. Saturday's game was not good, but I'm willing to see what CPR has up his sleeve this week before I melt down. I didn't think we'd go undefeated this season.

Completely agree with the zone read thing. We need to play to Steeles strenghts and the zone read isnt one of them. Take it awaywhen Steele is running the offense. If Barnett is in there, he is clearly better at the zone read.
