    Re: Royce issues new statement

Looks like ESPN updated the article with getting a private bus...I'm guessing there's more to it then that but I think it could work for short trips.

    Re: Royce issues new statement

What I think this might be is that Royce has been around the NBA for a little bit now and has a better idea of what to expect. Unlike college the NBA is meant to be a long term thing for his life. From all the articles on Royce that I've read, much of his life seems to have been quite miserable due to his condition. Whatever I would have to do to prevent that definitely would be worth it to me. Especially for him since basketball doesn't appear to be the most importantant thing in his life.

All I know is that Royce was one of the best Cyclones ever, and if I'm picking sides, its Royce all day.

I agree with this. As someone also said before, Royce worked to convince the NBA GM's that his anxiety wouldn't be an issue and that they would be safe to draft him. It's time for him to suck it up and get his *** to camp. They're paying him a lot of money, he can spare some of it to make himself more comfortable.

I really hope that Royce handles this in a manner that will allow him to flourish. Obviously, we do not know the background which led to this, but there's no way that this should have been released publicly.

    Re: Royce issues new statement

What is wrong with some of you saying he needs to suck it up? Obviously none of you have anxiety or a severe mental illness like him. I respect the hell out of him for doing this. How many athletes have we had that didn't want help and ended up doing stupid things like taking their own lives? Too damn many! And for the people that have a question on why he is doing this now over later? I have anxiety like Royce. There are many times where I look towards things in the future and think oh yeah I can do this, then when that time comes anxiety kicks in when that time arises. Until Royce does something absolutely terrible he is going to have the respect for the people he is trying to help, and I doubt he cares too much what people think outside of that.

    Re: Royce issues new statement

From his tweets, he says he is fine right now, but wanting a plan for the future, whatever that means. Maybe he's got a personal doctor that he wants to go with him and the Rockets said it was a no-go?

    Re: Royce issues new statement

I'm a big Royce fan, but this doesn't sound good.

First I think there is a trust issue. I remember in the time leading up to the draft there were many statements saying flying was no issue, he only drove to a couple games and that was more out of convenience etc etc. Now he is saying he wants a bus to travel between games. (How many NBA road trips are driveable anyway without missing time with the team?) It feels almost a little bait and switch. Since Fred was a part of that conversation pre draft I hope it doesn't effect his credibility.

Second the timing of this is really odd. As others have mentioned he has had months to work this out, why now? It almost feels like some kind of bad publicity stunt.

Finally why go public? I know Royce likes talking about his disorder and I appreciate what he has done to get awareness. I think a better route would have been to work out the details privately and then go public with the results for awareness. An employer never likes an employee going public like this and I imagine his teammates are sitting at camp wondering what the heck is going on. Just not a great way to build relationships with your new team/organization.

Like I said I'm a Royce fan, just not a fan of how this has been handled. I'm hoping he hasn't picked up some bad advisers. It wouldn't be the first time the wrong people latched on to a rookie and hurt them.

I adore Royce, but I agree with this. In any other profession, you can't demand that your employer work around your mental disease in ways that mean you're not doing key parts of your job. He HAS to travel to be in the NBA, he HAS to fly. There's really no other options.

Having watched his previous features and read articles on his advocacy of mental illness, my guess as to why he released this to the public is that he wanted to draw more attention again to anxiety, to let people know he was fighting for them. I think that's great to advocate, but not at the expense of your employer.

And if he is in breach of his contract, does that give the Rockets cause to terminate it? This could turn into a publicity nightmare for both sides. His salary isn't chump change, especially with financial issues the NBA is facing.

From what I got out of the article, it looks like he wants to buy himself a bus, and use it to get to driveable cities. I'm not sure why this would be a problem for the Rockets management, other than he's not traveling with the team.
