Those who are still pro-spread offense, can anyone explain why? Just legitimately curious.

Common sense? Really? I guess "common sense" has nothing to do with facts then, huh? Because by all accounts, this offense stinks.

No, no, no...because you keep stubbornly ignoring the facts that other people have presented--and keep bumping this thread.

Sorry, time to stop feeding the troll.

The fact is, this offense's struggles over the past couple years are not going to be fixed and solved through the first four games of a season. That is common sense.

There are multiple reasons I like the spread offense.

    - I have generally been pleased with the running game out of this spread. It didn't work last week, but I think we can have a prolific running game with improvement out of the O-Line. We've broken a pretty high number of big running plays the last two years.
    - The spread makes reads easier for the QB. Just to use Steele as an example, if you all are concerned about him making a pretty simple read on one D-lineman, how do you expect he would do when he has to make reads while dropping back from a behind center snap and maybe some play-action. If I thought ISU was going to bring in a Top 10 pro-style QB every few years, I'd be more apt to support a pro-style offense.
    - I do think ISU can bring in effective read option spread QBs. By effective, I mean throw like Jantz, run like Barnett, and with less mistakes. I think the offense will look a lot better with better QB play.

Re: Promoting Messingham to OC was a mistake

i agree with original OP. Offense is plain in a bad way. I feel like we are trying to become what a typical Big12 offense has been, about 10 years behind the ball... We need to invent, and be the next offense of the Big12... tough, physical, etc... pro style, stanford style... Great D, Strong running game from shotgun and from under center.

The call to go with Jantz because he can make throws JB cannot is just plain stupid... We dont have the receivers to even attempt the throws JB cannot make anyway. Jantz has to have more turnovers per start then any qb in ISU history.

Re: Promoting Messingham to OC was a mistake

I think we are missing the big picture concerning the TT game. Possessions were the key to this game and the offense did not remotely pick up it's end of the workload.

Compound this not with SJ's turnovers, (only one in the first half) with our inability to burn clock and keep TT's offense off of the field, while in at least 5 plays Jants having to point or move people into correct positions before the plays.
Besides the stats below, one one the most mind boggling things I question is why oh why when we do check to a different play do we not in some dergree pretend to give signals to the entire team. We commincate to the line and a RB, versus also some type of signal call to WR's regardless if we are chainging the play or not. I counted six times that we did this with the line and RB's. All six times were runs.

Re: Promoting Messingham to OC was a mistake

I think we should adopt a more pro-style offense, and less of a spread, because in the Big 12, we do not have the caliber of player to run what the other teams are running. Do you think running exactly what the Texas Longhorns run, against the Texas Longhorns, will work? NO! We need to change up the offense, whether it be to a Pro-Style, Option, Veer, Notre Dame Box, Air Coryell or anything! The spread doesn't work in a conference full of people who run it much better than we do! We are ISU. We need to be different, at least right now, to have success.

My problem with our running game is that we seem to get a 15 yard gain, and pick up a first down. Then the next two running plays get 2 and -1. So we punt. But the stats say 3 rushes for 16 yards! Over 5 yards a carry! It isn't like we move the chains with consistent 4,5 or 6 yard gains.

When ISU was running that fans wanted the spread. Now 4 spread OCs later you think the team should go back to the pro style. Maybe the problem isnt the system or the OC but players that are in that system. The biggest issue is below average QB play year after year after year. In the past winning seasons the D carried the team to wins and all the Meyers, AA and the OC at the time had to do is not give the game away. Now we have a QB that is giving the game away. If you have a QB that can complete a pass for over 10 yards you have issues. There is only so much you can do as an OC when your playbook is limited due to poor QB play.

The gap in our economy is between what we have and what we think we ought to have--and that is a moral problem, not an economic one. - Paul Heyne
