    Des Moines Marathon

Is anybody else on cf going to run this? I signed up 6 months ago and kinda put off that whole training thing until now, but since it's already paid for it would be a waste not to attempt it haha. My goal is to do it under 4:30.

A friend of mine is doing it and wanted to do this weeks color run, where they throw crap at you along the way, but can't. I volunteered to combine the experiences for him and told him I would be at the starting line to throw eggs at him at the start. He strongly declined my offer, but I know he's just being polite. I insist on helping.

You are going to run it and you have not trained?

I basically did..."trained" during the summer and once school started I ran out of time to run so I went from September to marathon day without having run more than about 5 miles a week. Got done in 3:40 but I'm naturally gifted as a runner.

This should be good. The marathon runs right past my house, and the gasping, out of shape, unprepared, about-to-vomit runners always make for the best entertainment. I'll see you in a few weeks.

Not running it this year. Next year you'll see me blazing it in about 2:45 though.

I can't honestly identify with the "ready to puke" runners. I've ran a LOT of miles over the years and had plenty of teammates who would run a race and then hurl their guts out for no apparent reason. Whether it was track and the person ran 200 meters or cross country and they ran 3.1 miles, they puked.

I'll be running the half with my wife. It'll be her first half marathon, so we'll be running together. Looking forward to it, it'll be my first half that is flat and it should be a very easy pace for me. Should be good times.

I did a lot of puking in my day in track, mostly 400s but did once or twice after a 200. Its not fun so be glad you don't have that problem. Although I never have that problem with longer races where you pace yourself more, just the all out sprint so who knows whats going on.

When is it? I'm running in the Chicago Marathon on October 13. It will be my first full marathon. I'm already nervous. There's something about running that gets my nerves on edge.

Yes, doing the full if I can stay injury-free between now and then.

Yep, "ran" one in Ames back in college with my dad without training. He asked me if I wanted to run with him (he had trained) the night before and I said sure. Made it to the 14 mile point running and then had to do the "run a telephone pole, walk 2, repeat" the rest of the way.

This time I'm trying to train for it so looking forward to seeing how I hold up on the second go-round 9 years later!

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

Oddly enough, I kind of like the Des Moines route. I opted for a different marathon this fall instead though. Hope everyone running DSM has nice cool weather and a great run.

    Re: Des Moines Marathon

Good Luck everyone! I have to applaud you guys for being able to pull it off. I have no idea how far I can run, granted, no where near 26 miles, but beyond the whole training of it, I kind of admire people that can deal with the boredom of it. That's always been my problem. I get to about 3 miles and I'm ready to kill either someone else or myself. 5K is the furthest I've ever been able to run. And when I say "run" I mean a pace just ahead of walking.
