Re: Man eaten by his hogs

My dad had a chunk of his leg bitten off by a hog.

One of my earliest memories was going to see him in the hospital. Almost lost his leg (and ultimately could have been his life) due to gangrene.

Re: Man eaten by his hogs

My dad had a line whenever he was asked by one of us kids where someone was. He'd say, "He went to crap (expletive) and the hogs ate him." Guess there's some truth to this. Anyone see the movie "Snatch" (see Janny's pic) or the one Hannibal Lecter movie?

    Mr. Wu is not impressed

I wonder how many times this has happened in Iowa because the hog to person ratio is roughly 7 to 1.

Yep, movie and book was Hannibal. That's what I immediately thought of, too. Mason Verger was a messed-up character.

Re: Man eaten by his hogs

It's not an uncommon behavior in hogs, it's part of why practices like gestation crates and tail clipping came to be. They will eat one of their own if they sense weakness or injury. It does happen even if they are housed in more "open" systems. I bet the man got jostled and fell or had a heart attack like mentioned.

But yikes, like the family friend said, "what a way".

Re: Man eaten by his hogs

In 2004, a Romanian woman was knocked unconscious and eaten by the pigs on her farm, UPI reported at the time. The news report did not say whether the woman survived, only that the pigs had eaten the woman's ears and half her face. Her husband, sedated, told reporters: "I'll never breed such beasts again."
Was he talking about the pigs or his wife?

They'll say it's because they're housed too tightly and are bored. Except I bet this man had what we would consider a traditional pig pen with a few pigs and not the CAFO-type facility. Otherwise, he wouldn't have needed to be in the pen with them.
The problem with the animal rights' logic is that this can happen even when they are free-range. Some of the boredom may be reduced, but if you don't tail clip or have some way to separate the big ones from the little ones, someone will bite a tail and then they just go nuts on smell of the blood.

I never knew that hogs would eat anything till I saw the Criminal minds episode where a couple of brothers killed people then to get of the bodies fed them to the hogs on their farm.
