    X's and O's thread

I know I'm not the only one on here that coaches HS football on the side. I really enjoy breaking down the x's and o's of particular plays and I'm sure others do too. If there are any plays that went wrong or right that anyone would like to see broken down to why they did or didn't work, post them here and let us discuss them.

I don't know that CF has the server space to discuss plays that didn't work.

    Re: X's and O's thread

Texas Tech was obviously well prepared for our zone read.
I'm not a football coach. It appeared to me that texas tech wanted to not allow the running backs to beat them on the zone read and force Steele up the middle into the teeth of the defense. It seemed like there was someone waiting for the running back to get the ball every time.

Correct? Was Steele that bad at making read or was texas tech that well prepared?

Do you run a zone-read based offense? Cause I got questions.

they had the zone read pretty well covered. Seemed like everytime we ran it, they had a linemen get penetration and was able to take the rb out of the equation and push SJ towards the middle like mentioned above. I don't know if it was a guard/tackle that was pulling and letting their man through or what the deal. Just know that their D-line had a good push on the O-line on nearly every play in that game.

Yeah they typically got great penetration. There were a few times we had some decent holes to run though and Steele made the correct read but when the RB would get to the hole the DT or NG would get off their blocks very easily and bring him down.

    Re: X's and O's thread

There was one variation of the zone read that we ran over and over that just didn't make sense. We would run to one side, with one the opposite guard pulling to lead, all other offensive linemen went the other way. So it ended up being the guard, qb, and running back against two DL's LB and most of the time a DB too. Saw it at least five times, never got a yard.

Next question: Who made the wrong read on the first Jantz interception to nobody? Did Lenz incorrectly break it off, or did Jantz throw it to the wrong place?

The read plays often allow a D-Lineman to be unblocked and then the QB has to make the read to deal with that unblocked D-Lineman. It's no surprise that one D-Lineman gets penetration. It's how you even out the numbers advantage the D has. The problem is that either our QB is making the wrong read, then, or our blockers are straight up getting beat.

Yes we do. Have had success running it when we had the right personnel, and had to make some pretty big changes to it when we didn't.

Is there video of this somewhere? I was fairly sure the second one which got taken off the board due to a penalty was Young running the wrong route because he ran to an area another receiver was already occupying. I didn't pay close enough attention to that one (which would've been a very catchable pass had the receiver been there).

Was it inverted veer? I didn't see that game as it wasn't covered on ImOn in Cedar Rapids (at least I don't think they have the Fox College Sports channels yet). Was the RB running horizontally with Jantz almost shuffling in the same direction the back was going? Blocking scheme sounds more like a down/down/pull or could have been pin and pull, but my guess would be that they were trying to read the unblocked defender and then if he took the back, Jantz would have the lead blocker (who would ignore the read defender and get to the next level). If there were as many players there to make a play as you mention, it sounds like TT didn't much respect the passing game.

I've been coaching for the last 10 years...mostly in the spread realm. Assuming you are from Iowa, what class have you coached at?

Since nobody else is asking, I'll keep asking questions for you football coaches.

Our offensive line obviously had some issues. Was it the whole line, and maybe some communication/scheme issues? Or was it a specific person or area of the line which was just getting blown up on plays?
