    Read-option

I rewatched last year's game and we beat them largely with a highly effective read optoin (White and Hollis had 100 yds rushing and JB almost did). The fact that SJ doesn't run the read option as well has me concerned. JB runs it much better and may actually be the more effective QB against TT. From what I saw against Western Illinois, Sam Richardson runs it better. Lets hope the SJ is working on that all week.

    Re: Read-option

I loved JB last year, but after watching him on Saturday, I feel he didn't progress as much as what I thought he should of. His throws were off, and if we need to start throwing it, I would rather see SJ.

Plus, I don't see a lack of confidence in offense with SJ like last year, so why make that change??

Agree with you... But before Barnett supporters come and say "he wasn't warmed up" or "he needs to get in the swing of things"... A D1 quarterback should be able to at least make the ball catchable on every throw regardless of how much PT they've been getting

    Re: Read-option

yeah, anyone who thinks that Steele isn't the best option we have at QB, didn't pay attention last Saturday night. Nothing against JB, but his passes need some work. And the "he wasn't warmed up" argument doesn't fly with me. Jantz started the game 8 of 9 passing. He didn't need any warming up.

SJ has been in the program for 2 years, if he has not figured out how to run the read-option, he is never going to (the week off will not help).

I am just hoping that SJ has not given the fan support a false sense of security. Remember ISU was 3-0 last year with a bye week before entering Big 12 play. The next 3 games were ugly on SJ's part. More importantly than running the zone read, he needs to learn from his mistakes of last year and this season on limiting the turnovers or elminating them all together. Tulsa, Iowa and WIU are not BIG12 competition.

    Re: Read-option

JB runs the read option better, always will. But unless Steele really regresses he is definitely the best option at QB.

    Re: Read-option

JB threw a short pass over middle and it was at least a yard behind the TE. That was just plain ugly. He should never see the field at QB again. SJ or SR only.

Steele has improved a LOT this season. JB looked the same at best. And I was in the JB camp going into the season.

    Re: Read-option

Give me the QB that can throw. In fact, get rid of the option if it's that bad. I would like to see us do more things inside than what we have done and I know the veer is in the playbook so I wish we could use that a little more.

    Re: Read-option

People got all over me for saying JB did not play well, blaming it on the OL. I would really like him to be a great back up or the guy that comes in to give ISU a spark, but he did not throw the ball well at all. People get on SJ for his TOs but JB had one with much less playing time and was very lucky he didn't get another one on a screen pass. He was not great on the zone read either.

    Re: Read-option

The veer is an option, so I don't think you can really say get rid of the option and run the veer. Also, I agree with the original post. Steele is better at the zone read, but not great at it. I'd prefer Barnett for this game too simply because we ran so well versus Tech last season. Frankly, Steele isn't a quarterback for an offense that runs 60+% of the time, JB can be, and frankly I think Richardson could be too.

    Re: Read-option

Steele started the first three games last year and we won those, but he seemed to get progressively worse in each (yes, broken foot, I get it). He started the 4th game, against Texas, to open Big XII play and we were decimated, at home. Things got worse from there (yes, broken foot, I get it).

This year Steele started the first three games and we won those, but he seemed to get progressively worse in each. Sure, his percentages are better than a year ago, but the turnovers have resurfaced, against teams that aren't very good.

I'm nervous for the kid and for us as fans. I want to see the kid do a great job and hold the job all year. But he's got some proving to do.

    Re: Read-option

Several interesting aspects to the read-option. I'm sure the coaches track this, and it is a well-protected stat, but I'd love to see what % of the time the various ISU QBs make the correct read. There is lots of speculation that one does better than the other, but it would be interesting to see what the actual numbers are.

Secondly, in order for a team to hit the 8+ win level, how accurate does the QB have to be in making the correct read? 50%, 75%, 90% etc.
