    Paul Rhoads and 24 Points

This is nothing new, but I was looking at some numbers earlier that continue to amaze me.

In the Paul Rhoads era, Iowa State is 18-1 when opponents score 23 or fewer points (lost to Mizzou in 2010), and 1-17 when opponents score 25 or more points (beat Texas Tech in 2010), with none of those games going to overtime. Rhoads is 2-2 when the opponent scores exactly 24 points in regulation; Kansas State in 2009 was the only game of the four that didn't go to overtime thanks to a blocked PAT in the final minute (sorry to bring it up).

It's pretty obvious to say that when the defense plays well, Iowa State is going to have a chance to win, but it's pretty uncanny that there's a specific number to point to.

What I get out of that is that our offenses have been having trouble getting past 24 points (our defense can play well in the Big 12 and still allow more than that).

    It is freaky...so:

Allow less than 24 = win
Allow more than 24 = lose
    Allow exactly 24 = tie

    Crazy.

Someone email Pollard. Or maybe Wally Burnham this time.

True, this offense needs to get more consistent. I like what I've seen so far, but there are obviously plenty of things to improve on before conference play to help make this team more competitive. I'm pretty confident in Messingham's approach, at least right now.

Agree with this. As our offense improves, this stat will no longer be relevant.

Yep, pretty much this. I would be curious to know how many games we have lost where the offense has scored more than 24. Basically, we never win when the opponent scores more than 24 because we just flat don't score much. I'm guessing there are very few losses where we put up that many points either.

Re: Paul Rhoads and 24 Points

First 3 seasons under Herman, scoring was under 22 PPG.

We scored 26 vs. Baylor last year, 27 against Utah and 30 against Nebraska in 2010 (OT), 36 against KU and 24 against MU in 2009.

We need to average in the 30s to move up in the conference standings.

I was bored and thought your question was an interesting one so I looked it up: ISU losses when scoring 24 points or more:

    Baylor: 26-49 (2011)

    Utah: 27-68 (2010)

    Nebraska: 30-31 (2010)

    Kansas: 36-41 (2009)

    Mizzou: 24-34 (2009)

Over that same time ISU has 15 wins when scoring 24 points or more. So basically, if ISU scores 24 points in a game they win the game 75% of the time. I would imagine that's a pretty normal figure for most college football teams.

I looked at the numbers the other day and figured out that everytime we score less points than the other team. We lose.
