Blocking Gunners coming down the field

Is it just me, or are we having a very difficult time blocking gunners running down the field? We have only had a few returns and the rest have been fair catches. It seems like the opposing teams gunners are always running free so that we have to call for a fair catch.

Re: Blocking Gunners coming down the field

My observation is we block them when we call a return (like the TD that was called back). Otherwise it seems we are in Todd Blythe punt return mode and just want to catch and get possession.

Re: Blocking Gunners coming down the field

I think we've had a little trouble, but I think the lack of returns can be blamed on the other teams punter. Tulsa and Iowa kicked it so short that the coverage team was going to get to there and force a fair catch no matter what. WIU's punter could actually kick it far enough that Horne had a chance to return it.

Considering the other teams haven't had a return at all, I wouldn't worry about it.

I like how Horne catches the punts with his hands.

Only 1 of the guys is having trouble block his gunner, the other one is doing a good job. Unfortunately this one guy is preventing Horne from attempting to return the punts.

I thought the same thing... Seems to me that you either go for the block or the return and ISU is going for neither.

Re: Blocking Gunners coming down the field

I get the feeling that we are in "safe" punt return mode- priority #1 is getting the possession of the ball, and a return only seems to be in order if it's one of those low, out-kick your coverage types of punts.

It seems like we are rushing the kicker hard er than usual, but not getting closer to blocking it. Id rather double up the gunners and get a good return

Re: Blocking Gunners coming down the field

We have never really been great at blocking them... nor does it ever look like we put any real effort into it. Seems like as soon as they snap for the punt our guy either lets the other go past or just runs backwards incoherently. I still get nervous every time we get punted to because of our history of dropping the punt.

Re: Blocking Gunners coming down the field

It could be that I wasn't seeing this in our previous games but I definitely noticed it during the WIU game. It could be as others are saying that we are not calling for the return but more or less just making sure we call the fair catch. However, from what I saw, the defender was past our blocker running free after getting 10 yards down the field and our blocker didn't due much more than give a push and start chasing.

As already stated it could be we are trying to bring more heat to block the punt itself, however I don't think we have even been close to accomplishing this that I remember, so my bleacher seat coaching tells me to put another guy near the sidelines to help block. All we need is to stop being forced to fair catch and we at least have an opportunity to break one for a touch-down.
