Play we were running when Nealy was in the game?

Anyone else notice that play we ran when Barnett, Nealy, and Bundrage were in the game? Barnett was in the shotgun with Nealy either beside him or possibly behind him in the pistol, and then Bundrage would come in motion and run back behind Barnett on the end around.

Barnett could either hand it to Nealy first, or if not, he had the option of giving it to Bundrage on the end around. He always gave it to Nealy in the game, but I haven't seen us run this play with the starters in the game? Is this because Jantz would have a difficult time running it as opposed to Barnett?

The reason I ask is because I've been wanting to see us do this for a LONG time! Ever since we used to do this same type play with Lane Danielson and JJ Moses coming around on the end around. It just helps to keep those DE's from always crashing in on the zone read to the RB. Keeps them honest to respect the fact we could hand it to the WR.

It seems like Oregon loves to run this kind of play in their offense and defenses have a tough time with it. And look what Nealy did with it... huge runs. Those DE's are kind of stuck in cement because they have to keep contain on the edge now with the threat of the end around play.

I'd like to see us do this more with James White or Shontrelle in the backfield and Jarvis West coming in motion on the end around option... or even Aaron Horne... or how about Nealy in the slot and him coming around on the end around?

I agree. I love those kinds of plays.

Wasn't it just a form of triple option?

I don't like the Oregon comparison. It gets thrown around a lot on here. They run a spread with a QB who can also make things happen with his legs. So what? It's a pretty common offensive scheme in college football.

If you put Nealy in the slot you're gonna have to run a few passes with him there too to keep the defense honest, otherwise it's pretty obvious it's a run.

This is very similar to what DMac use to run with JJ Moses. Would like to see West run the sweep with this, as he appears to have a lot of JJs abilities. Maybe it is just because he is so small, but West just looks like a guy that will make a lot of people miss in space. It has not happened yet, but he does not seem to get a lot of open field opportunites.

Also, I noticed we ran it once with Shontrelle and once with Woody. I also liked the diamond formation with Sontrelle, James White and Jarvis.

Re: Play we were running when Nealy was in the game?

In the first have, we were headed South. We ran this with SJ under center instead of shotgun. I was astounded that he was under center. The receiver came in motion, though it was a hand off to the running back. Are we just giving TT something else to have to plan to defend?

Re: Play we were running when Nealy was in the game?

    Thanks for all the opinions.

Running this play against Iowa would have REALLY helped out a lot IMO. Iowa's DE's were constantly just crashing in on that zone read and basically made it completely inefffective for us for the most part. They didn't have to respect anything on the edge to make them keep containment.

And to whoever asked, yes, it is basically a triple option somewhat, but entirely. It's not as if our QB, if he fakes the handoff to the tailback, that he then runs to the side with the option to pitch to the WR. There would be no pitch on this play we run. You either hand it to the tailback, or you hand it to the WR coming around, but no pitch. You can also fake it to both guys, and throw it too.

I just like the idea of keeping defenses honest and not just pinning their ears back on every play and coming at us. I also like the idea of finding different ways to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers besides our RBs... like Jarvis West, Aaron Horne, etc.

I think those plays are either called HB runs or called end around handoffs. I don't think it's an option.
