Good bye Battles/Campus town liquors building

Hello new Kum & Go. Hope Battles can stay open and close to the area.

Sounds like this has been moving along...

Anyone remember it as the Sandy's building back in the early 70s?.. had several hamburgers in there.

    Also, where is Battles going??

So there is going to be a new Kum & Go surrounded by a bunch of empty buildings? That isn't good news for Campustown.

I wonder what will happen to the old kum & go? I would think one of those could find a home there.

My bet is it will sit empty for awhile. With the underground storage tanks, there is some environmental cleanup that will be necessary, making it a less than ideal site.

Is that really a better location for Kum & Go? Isn't most of the traffic on Welch southbound from Lincoln Way?

IIRC, the site is bigger, so they can have more than 4 pumps.

I would be shocked if Kum and Go did not take care of all that before they tried to sell the property...

Yeah I doubt anyone would really want to pay for all the costs that go into the cleanup after buying the land.

They probably will (if they don't want to be fined), but it will follow the land title for awhile that it was a former gas station. Have seen many sit empty for years even after tanks are taken out. But Campustown is different, I hope they prove me wrong. Prime corner location.

I would think Kum and Go just wants to keep their Campustown presence while offering a a more modern convenience store, such as the one out on Dakota and Mortenson. This site is probably 3x bigger then what they are on right now.

Exactly what I think too. Would have loved to see a QT there though, I like that store more than K&G.

That makes sense. I didn't realize they were buying up the whole thing - I wasn't sure if it was one lot or two.

Used to be a QT but they bailed on smaller markets. K&G bought up all the QT locations in Ames. Sometime in the early-mid 90s I believe.
