Re: Record Player / Turntable Suggestions

I have seen self-containted record players (NOT the kiddie type) at Best Buy, but I have no idea what the quality of sound is like with them. My guess would be "not great," but I honestly don't know. I doubt many people working at Best Buy would know either (for fun, ask if they have a 45 for you to try out on it and watch for the blank stare). If they still have them on the shelf, maybe you can bring in a 45 and try it out. I bet they would be fine with it if it meant a potential sale.

I bought a component turntable several years ago from them that still works great today. I already had the receiver and speakers from way back, so that wasn't an issue. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find a lot of that type of system (or parts) anymore since so much is digital or digitize-able. I still like the idea of having an actual stereo system, and I still have every LP, 45, 12" single, and CD that I ever bought (3500 pieces and counting).

Re: Record Player / Turntable Suggestions

I think Best Buy/Target/Costco and their websites only have the cheapest belt drive USB turntables, which are only good for converting records to mp3 in the lowest quality possible.

Depending on your price range, check Insound and Turntablelab
Turntables from Crosley, Audio Technica, Grace Digital, Music Hall, Pro-Ject, and more - Insound.com
    Hi-Fi + Audiophile Turntables for Home Listening — TurntableLab.com

Since Technics was discontinued a couple years ago there has been a sky-is-falling mentality amongst their fanbase. I would wait until another manufacturer picks up the brand and re-continues the line and parts before spending more than a couple hundred.

They don't last forever and most aren't that expensive unless your budget is very small. Wait till one breaks then buy another online.

Several years ago I bought a Stanton ST-100 and have been quit happy with it. It is digital, but the A/D converter is quite good. It has digital and analog outputs, plays 33/45/78 RPM, and has some various pitch controls for DJ use.

Stanton doesn't make that particular model anymore, but the ST-150 looks nice.

Re: Record Player / Turntable Suggestions

I would check out craiglist in your area or your local hi-fi stereo store. Lots of times they will have reconditioned vintage units that sounds pretty nice. I didn't really know what i was doing when I bought mine but only paid $15 bucks for it and had the rest of the set up. Sounds nice enough for my ears but would like to upgrade someday to somthing that maybe cost $30 bucks haha

I agree, look at a local stereo store. You honestly may be able to find something to try out at Goodwill or Salvation Army, too - people tend to throw out their turntables.

Re: Record Player / Turntable Suggestions

A word of caution if you are buying a "vintage" turntable. The analog output from those turntables will be RIAA equalized, and will need to played back through an amplifier that reverses the equalization. Older amplifiers had a "phono" input that took care of this, but many new amps don't have this input circuit. If you try to play back a vintage turntable through a conventional line-in input, the sound quality will not be good.

At one time, you could buy a little filter box plugged between the turntable output and a conventional line-in input that would take care of the problem. The above mentioned Stanton turntable has a switch where you can set the analog output for line-in or phono-in use.
