September 8 - Impact on recruiting

It is my understanding that Urbandale junior split end / DB / punt returner and overall stud Allen Lazard was in Iowa City on Saturday. I know that he has offers from both schools and interest from teams that are perennial NC contenders. I have heard about 7th hand "from a kid that knows him" that his dream is to play for USC. His father played for Iowa State, his brother is a walk-on, and he's got a lot of family in central Iowa.

Considering that he's likely to be at or near the top of the in-state recruit list for next year, I wonder what impact the game may have had on his perception of the Iowa schools. Both teams needed help, but if he plays on the defensive side of the ball like I expect he will, ISU had to move way up based on the effort they put forth. Wally Burnham is aging like a fine wine...

Bottom line, we have to ensure that kids like this don't feel compelled to leave the state to find quality programs that can compete nationally.

A score something like 23-6 or better might have had at least a marginally better impact than the 9-6 did.

If he's getting legit attention from NCG contenders, no offense to the teams here in Iowa... we have a very outside shot.

Well if he was at the game then he is probably looking to go out of state now then.

Attention and offers are very different. He's 2 games into his junior season, but his TD/touch ratio is pretty ridiculous. He's got size and speed to dominate at the high school level, but so did Jason Scales. I'm not sure what his motivations are, but there are a few things (family on the team, proximity, historical family ties) that give us a shot on paper. We also have at least two more years before he'd see the field to continue to improve, and he could want a legitimate shot to play earlier (RS Fr or So). I don't know that anyone has ever turned down Alabama, LSU, or USC to play football at Iowa State though.

With our team he could get pick 6's and help the D and the O.

Re: September 8 - Impact on recruiting

I think we also need to enlist Fred Hoiberg during the recruiting process to extoll the virtues of "staying home" -- e.g. all conference selections, legendary status, prolific professional career, election to the hall of fame, followed by multi-million dollar coaching gig leading to multiple national championships. That should seal the deal.

we'll still lose in state recruits. They'll think they can contribute right away at Iowa.

I still feel good about Campos for some reason, think he will be switching to the good guys.

I just heard this morning from a guy whose son is a teammate, that his dream is LSU, as his dad was originally from Louisiana.
