    Frank Randall is retiring.

did not see a post on this. Randall is Mr. ISU. If you don't know Frank, you would know him if someone pointed him out to you. He is everywhere at ISU sporting events. Just did not see a post on this yet and thought I would post it. Good luck Frank. Hope you enjoy sitting in the stands and watching the games with us.

    Re: Frank Randall is retiring.

Frank was and probably still is nationally known as one of the finest athletic trainers. I am pretty sure he developed the leg brace worn by players all across the country back in the early to mid eighties. I think everyone wore them and he received some kind of honor for that. Someone who knows more can help, but I think those braces were mandatory for linemen, or am I wrong on that??
Frank is a real pleasant guy to be around, also.

    Re: Frank Randall is retiring.

Have talked to Frank a couple times. Was supposed to take a class from him, Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, for my coaching authorization. Was going to drive to Ames every night for a week and then spend half a Saturday up there.

Unfortunately, the class was not full enough and was canceled - so I had to take it at Johnston. Was really disappointed, as I heard Frank is a great instructor, among other things.

When we were looking to put together a CF flag football game last spring, he was quite helpful. Just didn't work out due to insurance reasons (needed to have insurance to have it on any of the ISU fields).

Good luck to him, he's certainly left his fingerprint on ISU athletics.

    Re: Frank Randall is retiring.

I had him for coaching authorization up in the Jake. He could tell from the way I was answering questions that I was a big Clone fan, so he took me on a tour of the whole place and the IPF after class one night. We ran into BVD and had an *interesting* conversation about him.

    Re: Frank Randall is retiring.

So are the new coaches bringing in their people?

This is similar to what happened at nebraska over the "Four Years of Bill."

In fact, the Wizard of Os just brought back one of the old, retired people.

Yes Frank was instrumental in designing the knee braces. Under Mac, OL had to wear them for games and OL, DL, TE, and LB had to wear them in practice. It sucked in practice your legs felt heavy and felt slow, but come game day you felt fast and light. But they saved alot of knees!!!!

This is a huge loss for ISU, but I wish him the best.

You are right on...he did develop the braces that the linemen wear back in the mid 80s.

I don't know if it is mandatory that linemen wear the braces but today you rarely see an offensive linemen that does not have them on.

Frank is a top notch guy that will be missed. Is Mark Coberly taking over?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I think Mark has been head trainer for quite a while, Frank was something like Facilities Manager or something like that. I'm not sure the exact time Frank discontinued being trainer.
