    Thursday evening confession

While there may be more reasons to be confident heading into this Cy-Hawk matchup than most, I'm nervous as hell. A win would be extremely gratifying (particularly because the game is in Kinnick), but I think my nerves are more the result of this specific matchup and the fact that I honestly don't feel like Iowa can beat ISU in a cleanly played game.

In other words, I think ISU is going to have to give them something, either via the turnover or devastating missed opportunities. And when you lose a game because you gave it away, those are the worst kind of losses, especially against your rival. Losses are always easier to stomach when your team gets beat straight up, but I don't see that happening Saturday.

Mix these ingredients with memories of our last performance in Kinnick, and my Cyclone anxiety is through the roof.

It won't be easy. We'll have to play a heck of a game to win.

No doubt. I'm simply saying that I'm confident we win it with a clean game (or a cleaner game than Iowa). But that's no easy task in Kinnick, especially with a QB who, on occasion, has shown himself to be highly mistake prone.

Playing a clean game is one of my least favorite football cliches, because there isn't such a thing as a clean game.

    Re: Thursday evening confession

    I'm nervous for similar reasons.

Also, even though there are more reasons to be confident than usual, it doesn't me **** in this game. Every year this game is almost impossible to accurately predict. ISU has summoned up the best efforts of their seasons in years past only to crap themselves the rest of the year. Iowa could beat ISU this week and lose to UNI next week.

When it comes to this rivalry talent does matter, but it is never the only factor.

But in this case, it's a valid differentiation. There's a lot of terms for it...don't let perfect be the enemy of good, checkers or wreckers, win the game, not every down, trying to hit a home run every single at bat. Putting the ball in some bad spots trying to be the hero was part of Steele's issue last year. If he doesn't worry about never making a mistake (a clean game), and focuses on getting the most without risking total disaster if it doesn't work out, he'll be much better off. We heard that with Tulsa...CW said something about Mess being the happiest he's ever seen an OC when the punting team was headed on the field, because SJ threw it away instead of throwing a pick.

In some sense, both are right. Steele needs to make less mistakes, but part of doing that is realizing that you can't be perfect, and what happens if I miss this throw.

Well, if it were Cycl1 I'd be pretty sure he was talking about weiners, but it's not, so it's not that easy.

I'm right there with ya psychlone99. This week has been a miserable mix of nerves.

I just want the team to go out and play well. I know they can win if they do that.

    Re: Thursday evening confession

I'm worried about Iowa getting up early. Iowa's running game is still solid and while our d-line is deep, it's not incredibly talented. If we "give" them early points through poor special teams play or an ugly turnover, I fear we may not recover.

Having said all that, if we go into halftime with an even game, I feel confident in a Cyclone victory. The second half will be ours.
