    Tackling in game 1

Did everyone agree with CPR's statement in post-game that we did a poor job of tackling??? I personally agree with this, a lot of situations where technique was not the best, and the defender would run through the tackle.
This needs to improve this week as well as moving into the rest of the season, I personally believe it will. Game 1 always has its rusty moments.

    Agree. Many yards after contact.

I think a lot of times the defender tried to strip the ball instead of making the tackle.

Second man to the pile should do the stripping after the first man has the ball carrier secured. Or first man does the stripping on the way to the ground after the tackle is certain.

I'm sure Wally and staff will have tackling as a point of emphasis this week.

EDIT: Or the team could just concentrate on stripping the ball after the ball carrier is already down a la Okie State.

Yeah the tackling was bad but I think it will be better this week. I thought a lot of times that the second guy wasn't very far either but even those couple extra yards could kill you in a tight game.

I thought it was ok for the first game, nothing spectacular. Definitely missed some tackles that really cost us, Jake and AJ included.

    Re: Tackling in game 1

Tackling in the first half was poor. I thought it got better as the game went on.

We all love the big play and forcing turnovers but as others have said the first concern needs to be making the tackle. The second guy to the ball carrier should be the one working to get the ball loose.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

    Re: Tackling in game 1

I didn't expect the defense to be the unit looking like it had 1st game issues, but I'm ok with it because I have confidence in them shoring up those issues going into week 2. Same goes for kick coverage. These are things Rhoads has continually preached since he got here and we've seen improvements. I just don't see it continuing to be as glaring an issue going forward. Maybe it ends up being a small step back from last year, but not as bad as it was against Tulsa.

I agree with this. There were some tackling attempts early in the game that made me cringe but it did seem to improve later. Maybe they just needed to settle down some (or they were told to settle down).

    Re: Tackling in game 1

It seemed poor, but if you listened to CPR on Murph and Andy on Tuesday he said the thing that surprised him most when reviewing film was that the tackling actually wasn't bad at all. On the field it seemed atrocious, but when he watched film, he said we only missed like 4 tackles.

My thoughts exactly. Early on, it was terrible
