I am for redshirting Vette... and completely agree with McD about Boozer. Those were the two that I thought a while back... and now with Lucca... we can't really sit boozer this year.

If Lucca's suspension gets upheld, can he be redshirted, or will he only have three years of eligibility?

Nope. He sits a year and loses a year of eligibility.

Vette kind of depends on Hubalek's health. I wouldn't oppose it.

Boozer kind of would surprise me though.

    Re: 07-08 BBall Redshirts

McD sometimes runs a big bench successfully. If Wes says at 2, Vette may be needed. Best to decide at start of season unlike football.

Does McD still have Mike Smith at 6-8?

I do hope Vette ends up with a redshirt because I just don't think he's ready and won't see much time this year. Could really benefit from a year of watching and getting bigger.

isn't he already a big kid? Someone on CF also said that he was homesick a bit - would sitting the bench upset him a bit? I wouldn't think players like to redshirt (ur effectively telling someone that has always been the best that they aren't that).

I'm sure a lot of coaches do this also, but I was struck by the class of Coach speaking with Vette and his family about the choice.

I think we need Boozer.. even with Lucca..

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

    Re: 07-08 BBall Redshirts

Thursday night he just looked like he got pushed around some, just my views on him. I also thought he got a little of the same in the Cap. City league games.

And to be totally honest, and this won't be popular, I just don't see the hustle out of him yet.

If sitting him for a year, which helps him in the longrun, causes him to get "upset" and skate (that is a huge if, just playing on the point you made), then perhaps he just didn't want it enough.

I think a season watching Jiri - seeing tape of where Jiri came from and is now (and is expected to be this year) - along with the training and learning of the system - could help Vette a ton.

    Re: 07-08 BBall Redshirts

I'm honestly not for redshirting anybody at this point. One of the reasons I didn't want to redshirt Vette in the first place was because I thought Wes would be in the frontcourt at PF still. I think it would be a good thing to have 5 available bodies in the frontcourt for the two positions in case some guys get in foul trouble, which undoubtedly will happen with youth and inexperience up there.

I think the deal is, I feel McD and the staff are good recruiters, and I think they can replace those guys with good players when they are gone. Experience is invaluable in college basketball and I guess any guys get this year is important for next season, and with Jiri gone next year... we need guys prepared and willing to step up, even in backup roles.

    Re: 07-08 BBall Redshirts

I really dont see Clayton doing anything this year that Cory Johnson cant do. He just happens to be buried on about the deepest part of our team, once Jirir returns. A redshirt would do him good. i dont believe in redshirting players cause they arent very good, Clayton will be able to see a lot more minutes next year after Jiri and Rahshon leave. He is kinda like how McD wanted to redshirt CJ last year, but couldnt due to depth issues.

    Re: 07-08 BBall Redshirts

I think you redshirt a basketball player based on two factors.

One - Is he likely to be the difference maker this year between making the tournament or not (or advancing farther in the tournament).

Two - Is he likely to be a significantly better player in his 5th year than his first.

I think Vette fills the bill in both - I don't see him being the difference between us making the NCAA this year and I think he has a big future upside.

I look back at Jared Homan. He played some as a freshman, but didn't have a big role. Had he redshirted his first year, I think he would have been a dominant player in his 5th year and would have been the key to getting us into the tournament.

    Re: 07-08 BBall Redshirts

My concern is if Thompson does not pan out so well, we need another big body.

Vette could be used to foul Alex Maric. Basically we lost a year last year with so many departures and it is time to throw the boys in the water and let them swim. Boozer does have an outside shot. I do not think we are going t win a ton of games and it will allow the young players to get experience for next year like we are doing with AA. Several of these players are raw, but that is why we have McD - he is a good coach and will use them for the best.
